With 9 stickys on conduct and usage I get the feeling "which lasers r gud?" Is a common theme that admins have gone to great lengths to mitigate, so with fair warning on how not to be that guy I figured I'd better say hello.

The last thing I need is another hobby, or even a project, but I got another hare brained idea that I can build a better mousetrap and since I have more money than sense I find myself in need of info pertaining to something I never took a natural interest in- lasers.

I promise to make liberal use of the search function and perhaps not even need to ask for guidance, but if I get stuck I'll post questions and hope for grace, as although I am capable of using logic I'm not techy so if you see me post please bare with me.

Thanks in advance

Welcome Jon, you already know where the search bar is?, your half way home! Welcome and enjoy and be safe. Always room for one more hobby. (at least that's what I tell myself) just watch your pocket book, it can get a little pricey. :)

Welcome and please do share your projects, make a thread for them and ask for input anytime you like, and if you wish to comment on an existing current thread, anything laser related to the topic at hand is typically well received and information is happily shared.

p.s. I love the pickle Rick with laser image on your profile, you should set that as your avatar under ( user CP ) edit avatar, for some reason our profile image and avatar are not one in the same but you can set it for both, hurry or I may swipe it. :D J/K

Welcome to LPF Jon Richard!
If you don't mind divulging, what is your "hare brained idea" that uses lasers?
Be sure to invest in the proper safety eyewear for the wavelengths you will be using.

Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your stay!

I don't mind at all.

Car alignment at home. Tons of YouTube vids of guys doing it with strings, it just makes more sense to me to use line generators for ease of set up and accuracy.

I have a digital camber/caster gauge that I intend to mount one to, and I'll use a second in a different color as a reference line. This way I can set toe further away from the turn radius giving me greater resolution and I can measure caster without using those stupid expensive turn plates.

Man I hope you're a car guy otherwise that makes little sense 😯

Sounds like an interesting project..
Anything an alignment string can do..
a Laser can do it better...;)

No worries...
Yeah... I know just a little about cars.

See, it even sounds stupid- alignment "strings"

So here I go shopping lasers on eBay and Amazon realizing I've just opened another can of worms, I'm either genius or stupid myself.

I found a laser I "think" will serve my needs that I "think" I can power with either a couple AA batteries or an RCR2, but I have to "know", if you know what I mean.

Me too, hence the "Bowtie" guy avatar!

As I was responding to you I was thinking- "I hope Bowtie Guy means Chevy enthusiast".

Hello :yh:

-Alex

Hey yourself

Looky, I filled out my profile and posted an intro instead of jumping right in and asking to be spoon fed like a good boy 😁

That being said, I want to be spoon fed😶. I want to build but haven't the time or equipment to properly test and refine, is there a resource to outsource engineering so I can focus on hardware?

Not sure what you mean by this? DTR sells modules that you can just drop into some hosts and call it a day. These modules contain a diode, driver, and lens all in one small 12mmx30mm package.

Jon, is this something like you're interested in? 50mW Green (532nm) Laser Line Generator Module (18mm) 5V - OdicForce
This particular unit is at Odic Force who are located in the UK, but I think this is generally what you have in mind.
BTW - These are avaivable for less, and in lower mW outputs, and even different wavelengths.

Edit: Here's a cheaper red line laser from Laserlands -Link-

That's totally legitimate, and thanks for the welcome.

I'm so uninitiated that I hold concerns about what to choose for my application, and without experience I'm guessing at what might be adequate and what might be overkill. Furthermore as I compile a check list of desired attributes it really stumbled me trying to find the best fit.

I'm want to explain further but is it wrong to do so in this section of the forum?

welcome to the money pit buddy, i have to say one thing this was the best intro from a new member iv read in quite some time good job. Staying under the radar on the first pass good thinking LOL !!. Well here you will find a lot of fine individuals and make sure you get some safety glasses first . Then and only then you will be giving up your first born to to the hobby. This is the best of the best forums . Wait till you see what some of these guys come up with, many are laser gurus. Well enough talk welcome and enjoy your stay here.

Oh no, they're on to me

Thanks Rich, I can see folks have a good thing going on here. Did you machine those yourself because we can talk about my Clausing also

I was thinking for daytime outdoor use I'd want an output of at least 50mw (assumption), but in a cross spot pattern with the widest fan angle available (>120*). And I like green for visabilty but have concerns about robustness as it will be an automotive tool and you never know if it'll get knocked. I read that green DPSS require a bit more care when handling. Should I look at one of the 520nm semiconductor units?

I would like it to be battery powered and was looking at 3v modules for that reason, although perhaps there's a better trick little li ion battery for 5v I hadn't considered.

I'm hating myself already for my noob'ness.
