I installed my new jetlasers 10X beam expander on my M462ed Thor M II and by god it works ! after messing around with different focusing I took it outside at night and gave it a little bit of focus and pointed it at the building furthest away and loe and behold there was the smallest dot I've ever seen from about a block away !

I tried to take some beam shot but my camera Sucks.....

Yep, I am getting to where many of my lasers have expanders, and I wish sanwu would make a 6X...... :can:

I have made sliding expanders for many of my 532nm HH's with a wider final lens and that tiny dot can zoom to the furthest trees and the clouds, but I stay out of the sky these days, but yes an expander is your friend, we should source a wider selection or have some made, I really want about a 3 inch wide 10X that will let all the power of the nubm44 through and into a tight package far field.

----edit----
Also future repurposed laser diodes are likely going to need larger expanders, I would like to have a large assortment to choose from, I am thinking about using PVC pipe and making some sliders.

Low divergence is king on my block.
Really if you think about it with the BE on this laser the beam is doing the opposite of what it use to do, Before the BE the beam would seem to exit the laser very narrow and the spot got very big far away BUT now with the BE the beam exits the laser very wide but now the spot is very small far away !

That's the best looking Thor I've ever seen :gj:
I wonder at what point should I stop calling it a "Thor" laser being that there is only about a 3rd of the original Thor M II left ?

Beam expanders are inredible in what they can allow your laser to do. This is my Sanwu 1W 520nm with a beam expander, and it's not even dark yet. You can see a dot on that building downtown which is around a mile away.

Haaa, good question, you've got Thor's Hammer, a Thor, all you need is a Baby Thor and than maybe a Sister Thor and you've have the whole family. :D

Impressive. Mind showing how it goes together?
Sure I'm still working on it so I have it mostly back apart so i'll take it down the rest of the way and take a bunch of pictures, The reason I'm working on it is because the beam is coming out of the collimating lens at an angle and I've narrowed it down to the cheap Chinese machining between the focusing housing and the diode housing.

I know it's not how the diodes pressed in because I cocked the brass plug the diodes press in to in the other direction and the beam still came out of the collimating lens at the same angle as before.

And I know it's not the focusing housing that holds the collimating lens because when I hold the main housing and turn the focusing housing the angle the beam exits the collimating lens at does not change....

Which building are you looking at ?

Before I can move on to the rest of the family I have to get this one act right and point straight.......

Looks like something Vader would have.
I Thought that too right after I put the black sleeve on the silver part.......

Why not construct your own to your liking? There's no technical reason large diameter input lenses can't be used. Say a 25 mm diameter plano-concave input lens for example. I came across a company years ago that sold beam expanders with very large diameter input lenses.
