Hello!

I'm in need of some help or information about a module that I am building into a custom host:D

I was recently able to obtain a 600mW 532nm laser module from Grey over at Jetlasers. He sold me the module along with a driver. The driver is quite large and comes with a clicky switch, a charging port, and a green and orange LED.

Here's some photos in Imgur to avoid resizing issues.

Now I have some questions as to what I need for this module.

-Would it be safe to replace the driver with a smaller one like the BlackBuck6 driver? The current driver states 2.6A on the side so getting a BB6 driver with the same current should work just as well right? This will save a tremendous amount of space in my custom piece.

-What should I power this with? I am a fan of using two 18650s as it provides my large hands with a fairly long and wide handle to hold the laser. I'm not sure if there is a max to what I should use with this laser though.

-Is there any extra heatsinking needed for this module? It doesn't get very warm as is and I metered it at about 750+mw. It was on for a full minute without getting hot. I plan on having the heatsink made of brass as well.

I'm hoping to have a focus knob made for the host as well so that I can place the lens in the knob and focus it that way.
Edit: Also, does anyone know the optimal distance from the output of the module that the lens should be placed?

I am mainly worried about the driver and such as I would really like to use something other than the provided one. Any help you can give me is appreciated:D:beer:

IDK if I would screw around with removing the driver. Those are usually purpose built on such modules and have things for a reason. Maybe others will chime in?

I can't help a bit but that sure is pretty.:)
I did see the brass mention for sinking but I don't think that brass is a good choice, i'm thinking you meant copper??
I guess you can make it focus but why would you want to on a 532?
Not that i'm doubting your skills but I can't be the only one:eek: freaking a little over you touching that piece:can:

All of the JetLasers 532nm unit run on a single 3.7 volt battery 18650, 26650, or 5V wall adapter--working voltage is 4.2V --2 batteries will damage the driver.

Why are you worried about the driver? Looks to be a well built nice driver and well heat sinked--why not use it?

Would guess it is best to ask Gray at JetLasers what the electrical parameters are for powering/driving the module if you want to use a different driver--email him and ask any questions you have.

PS nice module and driver--would not guess JetLasers would sell one unless special situation or repair

Looks good, I would use it as is but what I want to know is where can we get them and how much?

The pump diode should run around 1.8v - 2.2v so you could start at 1.8 on your PS but avoid static big time, maybe get a lasorb, you can probably find a driver on flebay for the pump diode, if your getting 600mw of 532 I suspect a 3w 808 pump but be careful, it could be a 2w with an efficient ctystal but expecting headroom it's likely a 3w 808nm pump so that's what you would drive.

I want it to focus because as of right now the dot is a big blurry blob. I don't think the module came with a lens pre-installed. Don't worry as I'll be leaving the module untouched. The lens will be attached to the host, not the module.
Also, I would like the host to be made of brass(just the heatsink). I'm not too worried about the heat as the module itself seems to already be a fairly good heatsink, As well as already having been partially made of brass it looks like.

I think I'll shoot him a quick question then:) The driver is quite large and will be bothersome to make space for it in a custom host. Although it will give me the longer handle that I'm looking for, especially when used in combination with 1 battery.

I emailed Grey specifically and he sold me one. I don't think they're willing to sell just plain modules to often though. He seemed like he was teetering on the edge of not selling it to me at first.

I'm gonna email grey about the driver I think.

Just maby Grey at Jetlaser is weary of selling just the modules because just of this reason of trying to mod something that alot of time and work has been put into it.
Now getting it to focus is understandable:)

That's part of the reason I have yet to contact him:)
I really enjoy figuring this stuff out on my own and it's always fun to see how it turns out. ElectricPlasma has done most of my custom hosts so far and he always does a wonderful job at making it work right. I think I have everything just about finished for this host and I will be using the same driver. Although I would definitely like to remove the clicky switch, which looks like I can just solder the two little red wires together to create a continuous ON mode. I'll have a tailcap switch for powering instead.

Yes good thinking. Glad you and EP figured a out a good host to make make it work out like you want.:)
Does that small typical momentary switch behind the clicky work?
They have been bridged on the smaller less powerful 532 modules.

Just saw this and looks like I'm too late to help. I hope your design and modifications to the driver work out. I would not have done it this way, but it could work out just fine. Looks like a really good driver for the 3 watt to 5 watt 808nm pump diode it must have. I would have incorporated the charging port and all the switches that came with the driver. Good luck. ;)

I may yet try and incorporate the chargin port;) we'll see.

Hey there giving this a bump real quick.

So I am preparing to set this module up with a custom host but the module isn't focused completely. I assume the PLE-Pros use a lens at the end of the host for final collimation so I'd like to do the same. The only problem is that I'm not sure what lens to use.

Can anyone help?

Here's what the output looks like in the current module only state:

Interesting. What distance is the module on your photo?

@ Lildutchboy; Really curious to know the answer to your question " can you use a bb6 to fire your unit safely " will be watch this thread in a big way cause I got something brewing on the brain very similar. Best wishes for your build, will be rooting for you. :)

Unless gray wants to give you the exact specs of the pump diode then I'd stray from an external driver. Just my .02$ on that, and plus Jet knows their stuff and these modules are built well I'd make the host to fit all the included parts if it were me. Good luck either way! Anything over 300mW 532 is a sight to see for me.

Between 5-10 feet I'd say. The dot is just a big blurry blog really, and when I shined it on a distant wall it became a huge blurry blob:(
