Specs:
450nm
1W (claimed)

Link: New Aluminum 1W 405nm Blue Laser Pointer Pen Power Beam Burn Cigarette + Glasses | eBay

Paid: $50.95 (free shipping)

Purchasing Experience: 2/5
I received the laser ahead of schedule, so that was nice. However, the packaging was done very poorly--the protective foam was just scrunched up and the pieces were jammed in the box. Including The projector filters were just bouncing around loose in the box along with the glasses (for which there was no proper spot). The photos were taken after I unpacked the pieces and repacked them properly.

They also sent me the wrong laser! Inspecting the labelling led me to discover that I actually had been sent a 450nm laser. Return process is underway, so hopefully I'll get it sorted out, but in the meantime, it gives me an opportunity to try out this one too.

Host:
All aluminum construction. Feels pretty solid in my hand though not especially comfortable to hold.
Nicely machined and lubricated threading.
Power button is on the back. It's a toggle switch with a rubber cover and a nice "click".

Batteries: 2x16350s included. The cheap no-name blue ones.

Update: The batteries are verifiable garbage. They were drained after only a few uses of the laser, and charging them on an Xtar charger showed they only took about 270 mAh to fully charge. :wtf:

Lens: Probably acrylic? (I don't know how to tell)

Diode: Not too sure what they've stuck in this guy, but again, here's a picture:

Beam:
Here's some pictures:

Summary: I feel like I got a pretty solid deal for what I paid, despite the obvious cheap components.

Well, hopefully you liked the pictures, even though my text wasn't very helpful!

Thanks for reading!

Wow! I wasn't expecting that!

And a video of the process:

Trying to chop the beam with your mitre saw? :eg:

Nice write-up, this brings back memories of when I first got a class IV laser after the 303 I got, it was this laser exactly. It's actually pretty solid for a Chinese laser which has reputation of being low quality.

Heh, thanks EP! The mitre saw had the best available clamp for keeping the laser stable and level. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ironically, it also has a laser to align the blade while cutting.

I love the Chenglish on the warning label lol. As for it being the wrong laser, there are actually no 1W 405nm lasers that I know of. I believe the seller just messed up and listed 450 nm and 405 by switching the zero and five.

I've been coming across that particular laser pointer on ebay for years, sometimes sucker priced for hundreds of dollars, that price isn't at all bad. To be able to see the beam it is far better you got 450nm anyway, power for power, 405nm is ten times dimmer appearing to the human eye.

I like that host, been tempted to buy it just for that and put my own diode in it. Can you tell me if that is a 5.6mm or 3.8mm diameter laser diode?

@Razako: I thought I had read that the newer 16x 405s go up to 1.25W, but you're probably right. It does seem more likely that the seller just had a typo in the listing. :/
@Alaskan: I'm turning in for the night, but I'll measure it for you tomorrow!

Just measured the diode, and while I don't have the most accurate calipers in the world, it looks to be about 3.8mm.

I'm pretty sure they measure the diode by the back half and not the can.
I believe it's a 5.6mm
Anyways nice little review and enjoy:)

Yes, the back larger part of the diode is the measurement. Don't expect anything higher than about 900mW on a 405nm (although there are some that have gotten that high) and even that is iffy as the diode is VERY sensitive and loves to blow.

I'm pretty sure it is an M140 which is 5.6mm. He can only measure it from the front. I've seen this same host on Chinese websites for years also. It is a very common host over there.

I've wondered about this host having legit specs because I see this giant thing rated anywhere from <5mw to whatever big number they put on it, but the price does get more expensive as the rating goes up. I guess one could always ask for the real specs before buying and if it isn't close after buying ebay and paypal should get your money back.

Would they actually use a M140 over a A type? I'm thinking also they are highly used recovery's?
alphabirth, do you see any markings on the safety glasses?
