FEELER: XPL lasers RG:yellow with single mode diodes.

Hi everyone, so as we all know, the company XPL lasers has gained a reputation on the forums now, for honest output powers, and offering the first handheld RG:yellow lasers for rather low price. However, the lasers use a 635nm multimode diode along with a 532nm DPSS green, meaning the beam types dont match very well, so i was curious how interested people would be in a RG laser built with a single mode 520nm green diode (either the PLT5 510, which would be cheaper, or the PL520, which may provide slightly more power) and the HL63603TG red diode, since its the cheapest single mode red diode available.

The price of the diodes (which im just getting at ebay, since free shipping from china to another place in china is nice), i can get the PL515 (515nm, emerald green, 100mW+ capable) for $22 a piece, and the HL63603TG (635nm, mostly red, slightly more orange compared to longer wavelengths, 230mw+ capable) for $16. the price of the laser build would be $60 each. so the diode+host would be only $98 with the PL515 and HL63603TG, and shipping from them would be $160 for ten lasers, so it would be $114 per laser for 10, shipped to whoever can host the GB, then only a couple bucks from them to another person in the US. in total, it would be around $120 for a 200mW+ RG:Y single mode laser, pretty good if you ask me. I (or the GB host) would order the diodes, have them sent to XPL where they would build them into lasers. They would then send them to the GB host, who would distribute them, or they could possibly ship the lasers to individuals, however i feel the other way is cheaper.

i am in very constant contact with XPL lasers, so dont hesistate to ask me to ask them something! the minimun quantity for this would be 10-15 lasers, so thats the mark we have to set.

In reality, both diodes can acheive about 100mW, but one is a slightly lower wavelength and less expensive. In my opinion, there is no reason to use a PL520, but its important for everyone to put their own 2 cents in so we know that we're getting something of good quality.

It would be best to use a higher power 635, or underdrive the 520, I think. Otherwise it will be too green. Remember, green is much brighter to our eyes than red.

Ill ask what they think is the best balence. I think 50mW of green and 200mW of red is good.

That seems good, might even be a little too red. :)

perhaps. the red diode ive just discovered actually reaches 230mW if you push it hard, and seems quite robust. ill contact DTR and see what his experiences are like with the diodes. If thats the case we would be looking at some very nice lasers. imagine 230mW of red mixed with 80mW of green, coming from a handheld laser! and you can switch the colors!!! im exited just thinking about the posiblity.

I wouldn't recommend pushing them too hard, but 200mW red / 80mW green sounds amazing. Of course you'd have to inform Peng about what current to set the diodes to.

Well, the diode did survive going all the way up to 1.1A, so it might just be able to run like that. According the laser brightness calculator 200mW of red and 50mW of green would be better, slightly more green in the beam, but slightly more red in the dot, so overall it would be more yellow. 80mW green would make a very yellow dot but the beam would be more green. Shorter wavelengths make brighter beams because of raleigh scattering.

Of course. But the brightness calculator often overestimates the brightness of greens. So I would recommend making the green a bit brighter. Perhaps we should vote once we have 10-15 people interested.

perhaps. I think the best would be to see what XPL says, since they build these on a large scale and have experience.

I don't know how their drivers work. I am interested depending on when all the funds need to be gathered. I can afford the diodes right now but the assembly would need to wait untill 7/15 to pay the remaining. if we could wait until after 7/15 that would be best for me. I'd like the cheaper diodes myself. I don't want/need high power. I want to use this indoors for work.

Second question, I need to have no more than 20mw combined.
Can they set the green only to 5mw and the red only to 5mw and have the combined mA set for the correct mw each to be yellow?(not 5mw likely 4mw green and 12mw red [not saying that is accurate just an example]) or would the combined be fixed to the single selection output but combined. (if that makes sense)

It's likely to be possible, I'll see if there's a cheaper red diode for you then. The cheapest green diode is the PLT5 510, and it can achieve 5mw, and I imagine a 15-20mW red should be easy to find. Along with optical losses it would probably bring the output to ~20mW.

And yes, we can wait. This won't be for a while.
