Laserglow "Free Domicile" option

Hey folks,

I just ordered a 473nm Aquarius from Laserglow and at checkout I was given the option of "Free Domicile", which states that if you chose to pay the additional $74, your item will arrive without the need for import fees or paperwork.

Thing is, import fees from Canada to the US shouldn't be that much, no? When receiving lab lasers from CNI in China in the past FedEx only charged me $30-$40 on average.

My question is: Why pay $74 extra when import fees could simply be $30? Also, paperwork? Does this mean I will need to pay the UPS guy and fill any paperwork(if any) upon delivery? Hopefully I didn't screw myself :undecided:

Well, many packages from China are declared as electronics with a value less than $100 to avoid any duties, regardless of the actual value of the product. In essence, they're lying about the prices.

LaserGlow, in line with their outrageously high markups, may just be trying to weasel more money out of you. I don't know how much that LG laser costs, though even given its mark-up, you probably won't be paying $74 as you said. The main benefit might be that you may not have to deal with any paperwork -- if any -- or any problems with having to contact customs to pay the duty to receive your laser. I haven't heard of anyone having such problems though, especially since those LG lasers are within legal power limits now, and LG isn't blacklisted by the FDA like some sellers.

Sweet! We shall see what happens then ;)

Do people in the US even need to pay import fees? I've never needed to do so and I've bought from laserglow, dragonlasers, wicked, and numerous other chinese companies.

Thought I would post an update for those interested.

Turns out(after calling UPS) the total duty/tax I need to pay is $46, which is less then what Laserglow was going to charge me at $74. Thing is, since the paperwork isn't filed the item has to sit in customs for awhile awaiting FDA approval and proper documentation.

All in all, if you can afford to wait a few days, and pay more then what duties would be get free domicile. Now, this is for shipping to the US, and buying "free domicile" dosen't guarantee customs won't look at it for a couple days but it does speed up the process.

Got a call from UPS.

UPS had to submit documentation to the government so the package would clear. FDA released the package, now only waiting on US customs :yh:
