Hi, I am new to the laser hobby but so far I am enjoying it and can see myself sticking with it and learning a bit. I also have little experience with forums in general (have spent countless hours reading them but have only joined a couple), so if I missed any rules please bear with me.

I am 28 and live in the US in PA. I have 2 lasers; a cheap green 532 I guess to be about 30 mw that works very well. and a POS high power blue 445 claimed to be 2w (I guess closer to 1w?) It is very powerful when it works, but it gets hot rapidly and has a carbon fouling problem thus must be cleaned after every use.

I am expecting a high quality laser to arrive very soon, and may do a semi review on it (if I ever get it):banghead:. More about later?

I am into all sorts of things (I know a little bout alot, but a lot bout a little).
Hoping to make my first build after I see how much I like this new laser (it will help determine what type of build to go with) maybe I will get to know the people on this forum and learn a bit then be able to give back down the line.

Hello and welcome to LPF.

I have never heard of this problem before, it sounds like something inside is burning and it probably won't last long. Maybe you are exceeding the duty cycle for that laser.

I agree that it probably is not going to last long. It gets warm (the whole host) after 15 seconds then hot after about 30. I never left it on more than about 30 seconds although the manual says it has a 3 minute duty cycle. After 30 seconds of ose carbon will be on the contacts, battery, and threads of the host and end cap. I guess it is overpowered with a bad heatsink?

Hi Wooski

Welcome to the forum.

Warm after 15 seconds and hot after 30 seconds should not be happening. That is way too soon really unless it is a very high powered diode and little to no heatsink.

Check and see if there is not a short happening somewhere. That would explain both the heat and smell.
If you need to, attach some pictures please from different angles, inside the laser, inside the battery tube and the battery also. Some of the pros here might know the laser and be able to help you out.

Arcane 2.0 445 from joker's site. Black annodize 2.5w

I would love to know your purchase date versus your received date. It would provide the forum some information. Joker's Order process is supposed to have improved. I would like to see the evidence of this. Orders prior to Christmas were taking upwards of 6 weeks to be received with tracking numbers that were unable to be used until they arrived in the USA. This is not indicative of his customer service. His service is excellent. His ability and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure satisfaction is impeccable. The shipping time has been his only downfall. I would like the opportunity to have examples of his improvements.

Hmm Im not sure of what to do here. I think I may want to wait until I get it then just sum up the whole experience (product quality, customer service, and shipping). Just because some things are still up in the air, and I don't want to say anything misleading. I'm supposed to have it in 4 or 5 days.

Where should I post a semi review? I don't know where is appropriate. Under Sci-fi lasers? Blue laser? general?

The proper place would be "445nm Lasers" or "Companies" if you also discuss your experience with Sci-Fi Lasers. A more thorough review can be placed in "Reviews".

Thanks for clearing that up, as I am new to forums and do not want to start off on the wrong foot. I think I will go with companies because I plan to discuss the whole experience dealing with Sci-Fi including initial impressions of the product.

Hi and Welcome to LPF many good folks here to help you, but if you read there''s a whole lot you can learn on your own. Sorry hear about the burning laser to bad you can't take it apart to see what's going on inside before it bites the dust. Hey it might be something minor you can fix. Good luck with your new purchase from Sci-Fi hope things go well for you, i'm sure you'll like it.

Rich:)
