Actually I kind of assumed each persons donations would be a prize so there would be more than one.

Great idea people donating their lasers for the cause. I just dont have enough to go around at the moment, but I will sure to donate, in fact just last month I was thinking of setting up monthly occurring donation to LPF, something small for now but it will be something.
----------------------------
ON another note:

I suggest, that who ever is willing to donate their laser(s), should not donate all during the same month. for example, laser chick can do it this month, and then another user who is willing to donate can do it next month, that way giveaways are spread apart and are monthly.

just my 2cents

Well right now this doesn't seem to be getting much notice. I'm not sure how many people actually realize whats happening.

Yeah, itll gain traction over time but we'd need a sticky or something to reach all members

I wonder if changing the title of the thread may help, too many people may read the title and ignore it. Maybe someting more like: "Several lasers to be donated to help the forum with donations" maybe more people will view the thread, but then again they might not.

Is there a link as yet where one can buy a ticket?

There should be a few things decided first like $ amount per entry, when does it start and end, what will be given away, who pays for shipping, who is allowed to enter, are you going to require positive rep and 20 posts or some such thing? All the details should be decided before it starts.

Just throwing my couple cents in here... Lots of good ideas here. The idea of spreading the prizes out over multiple months may keep people interested, and keep a steadier flow of donations coming in. There was mention of 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, that's cool too, gives everyone that enters each month multiple opportunities to win something. That being said, No one person should be able to win multiple items in a single month. If you win a laser, that's it for this month. May even want to make the 1st place winner from this month ineligible for next month, or make all winners ineligible for next month. That way we avoid the possibility of one or two people, even though the drawing is random, of winning all the good stuff. It may not seem possible, but a guy I worked with years ago won the first prize at our company Christmas party 4 years in a row. everyone had a ticket, randomly drawn, and he just got lucky. so it happens.
Anyway, if there are legal issues to iron out, well that's not my forte, but lets get someone who knows that end of it and work it out. The donation amount per entry is still up in the air, but I've seen $2 per entry a couple times. Where does everyone stand on that? Pi R mentioned changing the name to generate more interest, if that'll work lets go for it! Make this a sticky, get it in front of everyone's eyes. You folks that have been here much longer than I have better know how this works, I'm just hoping to lend some friendly suggestions, and show my support. And of course if I can help in any way I will. Once the framework is laid I will definitely be putting in for the drawings. Even f I never win, I'm still contributing to this community that I have come to love and respect, and that's good enough for me.

AS Pi R said above "There should be a few things decided first like $ amount per entry, when does it start and end, what will be given away, who pays for shipping, who is allowed to enter, are you going to require positive rep and 20 posts or some such thing? All the details should be decided before it starts."

Love to see the details get ironed out and see this move forward.

1st, 2nd and so on seems like a good idea
.. i could pitch in some 301's XD i have like 8. Obviously they would be more of a 3rd prize thing or not at all. Also i agree 2$ seems like a good amount

Just a thought.
If we did a monthly thing it could look wrong and it might miss a lot of less frequent visitors.
But if we let the prize lot build over several months then it's a special deal and wont look wrong, plus it will draw much more participation over time as everyone catches wind of it, and the bigger prize lot will be much more attractive.

I think in this case, people might hold off until there is a prize and no donations in between. Monthly concept will at least have constant flow of donations.

Another thing I have seen on other forums I am on, to get users attention with these kind of giveaway/contests, when user logs in, it greets them with a pop saying that, there is a donation contest going on etc etc and redirects them straight to that thread....if they chose not to participate, they can navigate away to other sections.

On another site I am on, they have title system, so if someone is donating, under their alias name, where the avatar pic is, it mentioned "Site Supporter" and you also get some reps for it. Same site has system for vendors as well, Site vendor has title "Trusted Vendor" and of course they pay monthly fee to the site.

there are many other ways...another one could be donate this many dollars and get equal amount of reps, something like that.

many many other ways to raise site revenue.

I think everyone should be allowed to win over and over if they get that lucky. Anyone can also give their stuff away to anyone else on the list. That kind of thing happened a lot in the past. Personally I don't like the idea of a winner having to have to pay to get his/her stuff shipped but I absolutely understand if someone has stuff but is on hard times and needs help with the shipping part. Of course whatever it is could be held onto until someone has the $ to pay for the shipping. The shipping could be really cheap unless the person wants it faster and is willing to pay for it. I don't ship anything slower than priority mail to begin with as it still has tracking and $50 insurance.
Another thing that I remember doing at least once was offering something like $20 to spend for anything at Fasttech as one. I just asked the person who won to pick out some stuff and then I ordered and paid for it having the stuff shipped to them. Trust me, there's always something you could use from a place like that. If you haven't looked around there you need too.
The tickets should be more than $1 for sure as it just doesn't add up fast enough otherwise. No matter what, there should be a larger response than what we have now so people can at least mention it as an afterthought in other posts and direct others where to go to see what's up rather than taking over the threads.
Actually, I am also thinking this is getting a bit too complicated. The way Hak did them in the past was fine. There's just no way to please everyone. Take a look at past ones to see how it was done
So, who is going to step up to the plate to run this thing? I just dont have the energy being sick all the time from my kidney issues and I dont know if Hak is up to it either but he can tell you how to do it. Someone reputable needs to step up and be big chief for this soon so when members rad all this they have a reason to get excited.

I'll see if I can find one but it was awhile ago. One of the members that I miss big time is Lazerbeak. Wish he was here:(
That's an interesting idea about the pop up gif.

Still haven't found a good example of one. Got caught up in reading the 1W 520nm diode disaster with the happy ending though. What a mess that was.
I did do something like one on my own if you look at my "pman special" in my thread but I didn't collect $. Looks like I may have to try to find one a different way or someone else will.

Her last post was on the morning of August 12, that's 19 days now, hopefully she just went on a 3 week vacation and didn't tell us.
