A host concept....

This is a little something I whipped up after hearing Alaskan mention how he likes Big Ass Fins™ on his hosts. The major diameter of the fins at the top is 2".

What I filled in with blue could be any color, or even GITD or Tritium inlays. Pay no mind to the extra modeled parts laying in the background, they're just left over components.

To me, a host without decent sized heat exchanger fins is just plain wrong, I want my diode to stay as cool as possible without having to worry so much if it is getting too hot or not.

I don't know if this is an option in your mind, and I definitely don't want to tread on Jayrob's or DTR's toes, but what about that heatsink made to fit either a Maglite or with a 510 connection? That may not be feasible, but a Maglite body was the first thing I thought of size-wise. Regardless, I like your design! If this makes it to the production stage I'd love to have one.

Or the MX900 host. I prefer the MX900 over the Maglite. I've been trying to figure out what turns me off of Maglite so much. I think it's the fact that they have so many flashlights that are still way underpowered for their size. They're just not my style. Of course, this is just personal preference. I think both would be good fits for this type heatsink, and this heatsink would definitely be great.

And thanks everyone for the nice comments about my concept. I don't think it would be too hard to produce. But, of course, a mill would be needed along with the lathe.

I came up with this design outta my own cranium. I wouldn't feel like I was stepping on any toes no matter what body I made that head to fit. It wouldn't fit a MAG as is, the minor diameter is sized for 18650's, but it could be sized up easy enough (I FREAKIN' LOVE SKETCH UP!). If it was scaled up to fit a D-cell MAG tube, the fins major diameter would be somewhere between 3" and 4". Remember....heat is shed to the air MOSTLY AT SHARP CORNERS AND EDGES! A completely smooth heat sink would not shed it's heat out of the device near as well as that head, it would just have more meat to suck up heat before it became saturated. If that head were made out of copper, only our most powerful diodes would saturate it

Well I think it is an awesome concept! You have a good imagination, combined with a good grasp of that program. If these do see the light of day, I'd love to have one. And I imagine you can (and probably will) find ways to adapt that heatsink design to other hosts. Variety is the spice of life right?

Oh and Tater, I'll have to check that light out, I'm not familiar with it. May be my replacement for Maglites!

It actually kinda reminds me of this design. Here's the MX900. Rick Trent makes some pretty sweet heatsinks for it, too.

Lol I almost downloaded it after I came across this thread, but I decided I'd be wasting my time because I can't make whatever I happen to design. If whatever I design is even recognizable. Lol.

I sucked at first, too.....bad. But I kept at it, and now I've modeled quite a few things. I've played with a number of free modeling packages, and by far Sketch Up has been the easiest for me to grasp. There are lots of tutorials out there to help with the learning curve, too. And once you get the hang of it, there are many, many extensions and tools to help automate difficult tasks in the program.

My problem is the shapes! Its only a circle and Pentagon. Its not like I can draw with it. I mist be missing something. I will keep at it, I never give up with anything until I learn it lol

Yes, that is the only shapes it shows on the toolbar.
What you gotta do is, when you pick the pentagon, there is a little box in the lower left of the screen,
and before you draw the shape you should type, say, 8s <enter>. That will change the shape to an octagon,
or any number of sides you specify with (x)s.

Also the default number of sides (24) for the circle tool is a little rough, I usually take it up to 60.
That makes circles look a lot smoother, and makes it easier to do precision rotation of the circle, as one segment in the circle is 6°.

noobphaser - Sketch Up is free. The trial will expire, but I've been using 2015 for over a year
and the only feature I miss that's not available in the free version is Solid Tools. There are
other ways to do those things, tho.
