I bought a nice and tiny Dorcy Jr host from a member here a couple days ago and decided to build a 532nm module in it. I'd say it outputs around 70mW, but can't measure it exactly because I still do not have an LPM. I used a 3.7V 16340 in it that used more space than I had expected, leaving almost no room for the module.

First I desoldered the wires from the module. Then I put a spring on the back half of the module (negative) and bypassed the switch by soldering a small piece of wire from one end of the contact points to the other end.

The wire that's soldered to the switch contact points only leaves a 2-3mm gap between the host and the wire. I plan on putting a piece of plastic or hot glue on it just to be sure it can't ever touch the host. Would be sad if it died because of it touching the host.

I had to cut a bit off the spring because there just wasn't enough room left to put the module in otherwise. I'll probably rebuild this whole laser in the future with a DTR module in it instead. But it's good for the time being.

Some pictures of the build completed. (sorry, no beam shots yet. Maybe later today.)

I know it wasn't a very detailed review, but I wanted to share it anyways. Mostly to show the people that helped me answer my questions that it all worked out and I now have a nice tiny build.

Thanks for reading

Nice job finding a way to make things work together. Where did the 532nm come from? +REP

I got the 532nm from Offroadfreak8582. two for 25$. Not sure where he got them from but I'll ask him and see if he wishes to share. I have a question for you though. I can't seem to find any pen hosts that don't have the module glue in them. I've bought a couple different so far and I can just not get the module out of it. Where do you get yours from?

Edit: Thanks for the rep!

Are you looking for just the pen hosts by itself? laser66.com sells them, here's a link to their hosts: Creative Technology Lasers - Pointer Host Component Page
They are in California though.

Re: Simple 532nm Docry JR build

Get the modules from Fasttech for $5.41 each (5V version). You can buy the 3V version which is actually a bit shorter but the 5V version can take just as low a voltage but gives you more options so you could use a 4.2V peak cell if you want (just gets rid of the rest of the voltage as heat). Always use code BLF for a small discount off some things. They all come way overspec AND have a pot for adjustment. I just always set mine for 43mA draw when I get them as I've found that's about the highest adjustment from setting over a 100 of them. I use the ceramic screwdrivers they also sell so there's no chance of shorting at the pot. Even without adjustment they will probably be over 50mW. What I've seen over and over is newer members spending way to much on ones claiming to be 50, 100 and 200mW and it's a rare case when you actually get what you paid for especially the 200mW ones. Keep thinking I need to go over some of this stuff again in a new thread as there have been so many new members since I posted my tutorials and where to find great bargains. Hate to see our members wasting $ or thinking they need to spend so much to get a nice visible beam. If yours is actually around 70mW it gives a pretty strong beam. 532nm is the beam for the buck winner by far.
Did the Offroad ones have a pot on them? Possible they might have been from back when Fasttech sold the 50mW version of them if they are a couple years old.

I'm not sure what laser66 has left and you should talk to crazy about them first. The regular $5 pens can be a gigantic pain to try and remove. Some are basically impossible, most are hard and only a few aren't glued well. Because of the length of a Fasttech 532nm module it will stick out of a laser66 pen about 1/2". A regular pen will stick out about 3/8". I'm referring to the module lining up with the button holes. The front part of the module that has the lens in it will adjust the focus IF you can make the back section stay in place. I've lit a black match head with as little as 40mW of focused 532nm.

Someone must actually sell the standard black pointer hosts. No idea who though.

Just found them on Ebay. Weird that you can buy a complete overspec unit for more money though.

Thanks a lot for the help Pman. +rep back to you :)
I'm quite sure it's at least 70mW as it's a lot brighter than my 35mW Viper from DL which are usually already overspec. It has a bright beam thats pretty visible in a daylit room. I'll check out those fasttech modules tomorrow.

Update: Made an attempt to heatsink the driver. Looks like it turned out pretty well!

May I ask what material did you used on the driver heatsink? I see some copper there but I'm not sure what else is there...

I used thermal conductive epoxy adhesive and put thick copper wires on each of the sides.

Oh, okay then. To me it looked like some kind of thermal isolator so I was pretty scared when I saw the pic in the first place. :D

By the way good job on the laser.:gj:

Re: Simple 532nm Docry JR build

this (exact)host is no longer being made afaik- and those w/ them do not normaly want to part with ANY- so it was a super find!!several here make heatsinks for Dorcys-
extended for longer modules--

not to crazy about the brass you have showing--

my plan
120mW 520
300mW 450
?mW of a good bright red w/tight beam
have a swell old wood case for all three-

+6 for the OP good job!!

They're hard to find nowadays indeed. I got lucky and bought it off a member here last week. I might search for an extended heatsink in the future, but this is alright for now. I agree it doesn't look as nice as it would have with the module not sticking out, but it's only a temporary build after all. Aixiz modules are luckily shorter so that'll look nice for sure. What do you think about my attempt to make a decent heatsink? Did I do well?
