The FDA is primarily going after importers, right?

Domestic sellers - less competition, right?

and if its caught by customs i lose it ? yes i live in the usa

Yep you will never even hold it in your hands if they get it.... But wicked says they will give a full refund if it is caught by customs. They may just try sending another one if it does or just get your money back. Like I said tho this will be my first dealings with wicked too.

What I understand is that the FDA will not let any lasers over 5mw be traded, sold, or gifted in the usa . so this means not only importers but also local sellers as well but local sellers are not going Thur customs so less likely to get cuaght .

Lasers or laser pointers? So that means the government has banned lasers over 5mw? That's not what I remember hearing last. I heard WL is allowed to import, because they have proper safety features and are FDA approved.

Nonsense. They say that just to make people think they are legitimate. In reality, assembled Class IV lasers may not be imported into the USA, without exception.

Really?

"We guarantee that the Inferno is 100% legal under U.S. federal law and federal safety requirements."
Can you find a statement to back that up? Does that also mean that Sci-Fi lasers is selling illegal stuff? Not that I wouldn't buy it..............but you know.

Trust me non of those sites are legally selling lasers to the usa. The only thing they could do to make their lasers FDA approved is to drop the power to 5mws

So do you believe LPS?

Read this! Some might blame Wicked Lasers. However, what they are doing is not illegal under U.S. law. They are responding to perceived competitive pressure to be “the first with the most”. If they did not do this, some other company would. And Wicked Lasers should be given credit for making it clear to purchasers about the extreme hazards of the Spyder III Pro Arctic:

At this link: Laser Pointer Safety - Alert about dangerous Class 4 lasers

Also Wicked Lasers says this: " In addition, every laser comes with the safety features such as interlocks that are required for the laser's Class.

We have also gone beyond legal requirements."

The FDA and customs is clearly still running in a mode where the primary problem is a flood of cheap, high powered DPSS greens from China. The laser 'meta' so to speak has shifted to much higher powered >1watt 445's that are increasingly being assembled domestically and the FDA clearly hasn't figured out how to deal with this.

I'm all for laser safety and proper regulation, but the current rules regarding interlocks, keys and so forth are so utterly absurd that only a govt agency could take them seriously.

Fortunately, there have been almost no instances of 445s being shined at airplanes - clearly those who buy 445s are more responsible than those who buy cheap Chinese 532s.

NO, 445s unless fitted with expensive corrective optics do not have the low divergence of 532. Average NOHD of a typical 445, 800 feet at best.
The divergence is so bad they often don't reach the plane/helicopter as more then an annoyance.

My bet, if this is not a sham:

Wicked Lasers owner was rumored to had/have a house in a nice Ritzy section of LA.

I'll let you do the thinking on that one.

My bet, if this is not a sham:

Wicked Lasers owner was rumored to had/have a house in a nice Ritzy section of California, possibly LA. That makes him or some part of his family vulnerable to some form of sanction under US law. While FDA may be weak in this area, US Customs is not.Even if he's overseas, loss of a big house might just be a serious wallop. Also all the currency conversion and credit card action had to happen some where, probably under US Jurisdiction.

Or he just got tired of decreasing profit from market saturation.

He might not be safe in China from Extradition, either. I'm sure people get extradited when it is in the interest of the ChiCom Party.

I'll let you do the thinking on that one.

This, as well - 445s do have terrible divergence. I would say though that the owners of 445s are still at least slightly more responsible than those of Chinese 532s.

I'll take serious issue with this statement.

NOHD refers to the threshold at which possible skin or cornea damage can occur. The main hazard with which the FDA is concerned with is the glare distraction caused by laser light illuminating cockpits of aircraft at night due to the extreme contrast levels, not cornea or skin damage. This range is at least twice NOHD.

If you think a 2watt 445 using a simple 3 element lens isn't capable of seriously causing a vision issue at 800 feet point to point at night you haven't been working with them long. This past summer I was hit with a 1watt 445 at a distance of approx 1100 feet on a pier in lake michigan and the intensity level was certainly distracting.
