Wicked Lasers releases "open source" laser

Well thats certainly different. But what REALY could you make it do? Strobe at diff speeds and power levels?

Dosent seem quite all that? What am I missing?

It is definitely novel

Also, cool host

It uses 2 AA's and since it's a pen style, probably can't be that powerful. I'm already uninterested.

A laser I can upload code to? I can't not like it...

A $30 programmer? :eek:
It's just a basic PICKit, isn't it? Tad spendy.

I quite like the idea though. May have to grab one. Where's all the open source docs? Can only find the user manual on the site.

I was looking on the WL website and found this on their "Product Review"

Straight from the website:
It's open-source and smartphone-controllable, so anyone can create create apps for it on iOS and Android. The Evo has fully variable power selection and 4 operating modes: momentary, constant, strobe, and bypass. There's even a hidden mode we like to call "Woz mode", requested by the great himself.

Anyone notice the 2 creates?

Just something to point out :beer:

With you on that one, eBay pens only get a bad wrap because they have a boring host.Most eBay pens are way way overspec if you put the same modules in a good looking host people would not have a problem with them at all.And uploading to a pen style laser hmmm pass ..my 2 cents worth

Sounds like a gimmic to me, a 100mW laser for 300 Dollars.
Too right damn i have eBay pens that output almost that much in green and violet and way more in red all day reliable that's the pen taken care of ...so that's 8 dollars that leaves, $292 for the gimmick to use your words +1

Screams dangerous as hell to me.

i reckon, do you think it would be able to turn on purely by code?

if it can control the power, imagine the people who dial in something similar to this:

#include<ledthediode.h>

using namespace std;

int main ()
{
diode current set > "9000";
cout << "Its over nine thousand!";
return 0;
}

I'm confused, I haven't found any driver schematics, gerber files, CAD drawings or anything.
What about this laser is "open source"?
