With this post to Laser Pointer Forums I resign from the world of DIY lasering.
After well over $500 with only 2 weeks of a 405nm and about a month of 445nm lasering before they died, as well as several blown diodes and broken and burnt out drivers, to show for it.
It was fun while it lasted, I just wish it lasted longer and turned out better per dollar.

I'm not quite sure what this thread is supposed to accomplish, so I'll just offer this quote:

This is a very expensive hobby and addictive at times:). I know I have put quite a bit of $$$ into some projects that have died out of the gate, but have always learned from my mistakes. To me, it sounds like you might have been too ambitious with your first projects.

If its truly something that interests you, step back and start small. You have the New Year to start fresh, like a ctrl-alt-del on your failed projects. Try a couple of builds with cheaper diodes and drivers, especially since you have 2 relatively new host available. The cheaper diodes (under $10 each) are great for cutting your teeth and learning what to do and what not to do. Also a great place to practice soldering techniques and honing your assembly skills.

If its not really a hobby for you, cut your losses now, but something drew you in initially.

If you decide to keep lasering, read and use the information in this forum. There is so much knowledge here and lots of very helpful people with soooo much experience. Almost everything has been tried by someone here.

Happy New Year and good luck in your future endeavors, whatever they may be.

Bah, losses like this are part of the science behind what we accomplish. I've suffered 10 times the losses you've described above, you'll be back in a few weeks ;)

Sorry to hear it. The amount of money I have lost due to lasers and equipment dying on me is............ hard to think about. But the equipment I do have that is still functional makes it all worth it. Take a look at my sig (that isn't half of my lasers/laser related equipment).

yeah i know what you all mean. id really like to repeal my resignation some day but i really just dont have the money to support it atm.

par for the course.... like I said before, you'll be back in a few weeks. Just take some time off from your setbacks, shake it off & prep yourself to go back & identify where you went wrong and correct your mistakes

You don't need to "resign" just because you're lacking funds... My number one hobby is downhill skateboarding, but 4 months of the year the weather prevents me from doing it. That doesn't mean I'm going to quit skateboarding for those 4 months, I see it as an opportunity to work on my set up, and watch LOTS of videos of myself and others to see if I can find ways to improve. So if you're low on funds don't just quit, use the time to expand your knowledge so the next time around it might work out better for you. Also there are plenty of cheap 50mW+ lasers on ebay, I picked up one violet and one green from ebay they were about 12 bucks each, they run on 18650 batteries, have a bright beam and focus ring and easily light matches, pop balloons and cut electrical tape, they can even punch holes in a cd case. Plus the fact that they are cheap means they need some tinkering to get them working properly :D:D, and if you mess up, so what it was only 12 bucks. You dont need a big badass laser to have fun. Am I right? :D:D:D
