Any good parts in a plasma tv?

I have a 50" Hitachi plasma that just crapped out. Made a little "pop" noise and stopped working. It's a few years old and I don't want to mess with it so its going to the dumps. (recycler).
I'm going to pull off the back just to check it out.
Any good parts inside these things worth keeping?

Sounds like a capacitor blew. Its an easy fix. Dont rip it apart. Its still probably good.

Follow your nose and smell the burn component. Maybe it is still repairable.

Yeah man. Check that thing for blown components. Might be a 5$ fix

If you can't repair the tv do some experiment with it. Use a high power laser and pop those plasma pixel on the screen. I always want to know that if that is possible

Lol, from personal experience it works on LCD's, turns them white permenantly.

I second that.... hit my 26inch LG computer monitor in the top right corner with one of my high power 445s and there is a little blob of white and a very tiny spec of burnt plastic. Unfortunately I had a really tight focus for that range after doing burn tests with a G2 so it was instantly burned. Lucky for me I have 3 screens and that is one of the side screens in a far corner so it isn't the most noticeable of places and doesn't bother me much.

Anyway, I think you would have to be a little nuts not to at least attempt a fix even if you want to use it as an excuse to get a new TV. Like duke said, buy the new TV and then attempt a repair at least.

I wonder how much that would be to ship to me since I also live in CA. I would almost be willing to pay for it if you intended to scrap it anyway :crackup:

I pulled the back off and looked. Can't see anything obvious. Looks like a lot of good stuff if you know what you are doing. I'm not that electrical.
I can have a repair guy check it out for $100.
Think I may do that.
APEX, I'm in Marin. Not that far. If I get rid of it you can come and get it.
No way I can pack it up to ship.

Hmm, my buddy has a pickup truck. If you do decide to toss it maybe I can convince him to help me get it.

There are lots of things if you are into electrical stuff. Close to 4 dozen different size capacitors (didn't pay attention to rating but approx 1/4" dia up to 1 1/2"), power supplies, heat sinks ( 7 extruded AL up to 6 in long). A few dozen rectangular black things with three prongs screwed to heat sinks.
Don't know what they are.
Could be great for parts.
I guess I could pull out all the boards it I junk it.
Any way, I will get it checked out early next week.
Then I either pull the boards or APEX can come get it.
Worked PERFECT until the little "pop".

It must be something minor .. this sounds like cap, but you would be surprised how often it is just some loose wire.

Just had it checked. The display is burned out. ( I have hit it with a laser a few times. Hope that didn't do it)
I'm going to pull the heat sinks out and then it goes to the dumps.

I doubt hitting it with a laser a couple times burned it out. I could see that doing physical pixel damage but not burning out the whole screen. Anyway, its unfortunate that you lost your whole TV bro.
