Interesting article...

"Laser attacks are serious business. According to the FBI, they've reached "epidemic levels," with 3,700 expected to occur by the year's end. But we're not talking about some kind of futuristic death rays. No, no. This is about people with laser pointers blinding pilots...."

Good. I feel bad for whomever they'll make an example out of with the next 'laser-harrasment' related arrest but perhaps it'll show everyone else immature enough to consider such a stunt just how serious authority is about dealing with this 'blinding pilots' bullshit.

BTW ex-Mayor Daley (chicago) implemented an 'anti-graffiti' task force years ago in attempt to curb graffiti and vandelism(graffiti) in my city and it failed miserably. The expense pumped into the task force overwhelmingly outweighed the result never yielded & was eventually discontinued.

I don't quite think the word "epidemic" is well suited until the scenario has a reputation for human misery and death.

These laser pointers are surely the next biggest sweeping wave of human misery and death!

Definite waste of money!!!

The really sad part... "If you see a laser attack, the FBI suggests you call 911, email the Federal Aviation Administration, or get in touch with your local FBI field office."

I live in residential suburbia and occasionally (with great awareness of my surroundings) I shine my lasers into the night sky. Now we have to worry about our neighbors calling 911 when they see a beam of light... REALLY! Let's define "laser attack".

Maybe the FBI will re-open Project Blue Book.

Anyway, I just wanted to share the article.
Have a great weekend.

Attacks on aircraft like that is what caused the ban here on all handheld pointers over 1mW :(

Deterrence is not a successful method. Many states kill criminals for their crimes, yet the crimes still occur, and often at a higher rate than states that don't have this penalty. If you don't think you'll get caught, the consequences are irrelevant to you.

Another useless government agency that will produce no tangible results, but till cost hundreds of thousands to fund.

Definitely the most worrying part.

Btw, where laser incidents are concerned... all sighting by a pilot of a laser in the sky are considered to be just that... incidents. Even if all that happened is a pilot saw a laser beam far away, and the plane/helicopter is never targeted.

Well instead of making new laws to be honest, perhaps they should make new aircraft laser proof. I sometimes wonder as intelligence rises and technology increase how indeed they will feel safe when an average everyday guy can macgyver up a death ray or a salted fusion bomb. Screw I will be too old to care. I am always more in favor of the creation of jobs to fix existing safety flaws in something over making new and unnecessary legislation. Also I think pilots are being sissy nannies, I could with much skill , a tripod, and practice, flash a pilot's cockpit messing up his night vision, but not in anyone's wildest dreams could you realistically blind a pilot with a handheld laser. Military aircraft have been targets in the past but we are perhaps 15 years aways from a hand held laser if not 150 years with the power suitable to realistically blind a pilot.

I do not think its impossible at all. The only thing that prevents most of our lasers from being extremely dangerous to pilots vision is beam divergence. Our 2-3W 445nm lasers could EASILY blind a pilot if one was able to focus the beam at that distance. There are optics that could enable us to do that so at this point we are lucky that nobody with the skills, time, and money to make such a handheld has not started shining them at airplanes.

"Also I think pilots are being sissy nannies"

Have you tried fly or land a Boeing 747 carrying up to 660 passengers at night while some idiot it shining a laser in your window? I am not going to say what I think you are being because I don't feel it is needed.

Now that Osama isn't with us anymore, Homeland security has got to
invent new threats to national security. I mean come on
they've need to generate more revenue. Scare the public. Watch out lasers weapons....

Just like liquids, cutlery and bag space on planes. It's a way of milking passengers.

To recklessly endanger the dozens of lives on that plane is heinous.

To make a witch hunt for anyone using a laser outdoors is preposterous.

Someone I work with (who is also a pilot) was a passenger on a 737 someone hit with a green laser. He said it lit about 3 windows at once, illuminated the whole cabin, and as it passed his window he was blinded for a minute or more. He said it was a very rough landing.

I read an interview with a pilot who was lased and he said it just illuminates the whole cockpit and you can't see anything.

Well that's not what I said but I see what you did there ;)

Deterrence is not a......method. states kill criminals.......yet the crimes still occur......at a higher rate than......this penalty.

Sooo it sounds like you're saying just don't bother trying then, the penalty outweighs the crime? That is confusing :D

The next thing they should do is have us all call 911 and/or the FBI when someone drives at you with their high beams on and blinds you, after all you could kill everyone in your car and crash into other cars; I think we need an FBI task force for this.

My vision has been interrupted at least once a week from a careless driver with high beams on and I could not see the road. Hopefully Homeland Security will take this very dangerous practice and arrest these people.
