>>>SOLD<<< <1W WL Krypton ***PRICE REDUCED - $500*** (Peak 1400mW)

FOR SALE: Wicked Lasers <1000mW Krypton (with Middle Man)

Since I'm a new member here, I have asked Cyparagon to act as the middleman and he has also offered to provide extensive testing on this unit (details below).

ASKING PRICE: $500/BO - 2nd Day Air Shipping Included (FedEx)

<1W krypton measured stats by Cyparagon on Dec. 22 2011

Optical

Beam diameter at aperture: 3mm
Beam divergence: 1.9mrad (measured at 8m)

Power on low averages ~50mW with ~10mW of IR
Power on high averages ~900mW with ~20mW of IR

IR was measured with a IR-pass filter over the sensor head. This pass filter was found to have a 94% transmittance at 810nm. Every measurement yielded a different average; these are approximate averages of the averages. Output pattern has mode shifting every few seconds. The beam shape stays round, but the mode shifting causes frequent flickering.

Spectrograph of output:

First order magnitude from diffraction (on low) grating viewed from a camera with no IR filter:

NVREC003.jpg

Electrical

Cutoff voltage on low: 3.3V
Cutoff voltage on high: 3.6V

Current draw from the bench supply:

Voltage set________high__________low
4.2V --------------- 1.8A ----------0.50A
4.0V --------------- 2.0A ----------0.51A
3.8V --------------- 2.3A ----------0.52A
3.6V --------------- n/a -----------0.55A
3.4V --------------- n/a -----------0.60A

Battery run-time on high for the Samsung cell sent with the arctic (measured at 2Ah) was 23.5 minutes. This means only half of the cell’s capacity was used by the driver. The open circuit voltage of the cell was 3.65V when the laser shut itself off. 2.9V or less is expected if the cell is used completely. This was done after the thermal test; the casing was kept cool to be sure the over-temp protection did not kick in.

Mechanical

This is not my area of expertise, but this requires mentioning. The finned heat sink is glued (poorly) to the assembly and slipped right off with a bit of twisting.

Thermal

In this test I monitored current and temperature as a function of on-time at a constant 4V output from the bench power supply. Ambient temp was 65F. Case temp started at 70F.

Time (m)______temp (F)_________Current (A)
0 --------------- 70 --------------- 1.80
5.5-------------- 80 --------------- 1.75
7.0-------------- 82 --------------- 1.65
9.5-------------- 85 --------------- 1.50
14--------------- 88 --------------- 1.35
20--------------- 91 --------------- 1.20

The driver does indeed appear to lower current with increasing temperature. This does nothing to stabilize the output; it acts as an over-temp protection. I am left wondering why the set point is so low. Anyone in a warmer climate would rarely see the full output of the laser. The components can almost surely handle substantially more than 80F. I measured the power once at the end to be 400mW.

Even though the finned heat sink is glued, the thermal resistance to it appears to be low.

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

This is a WL plant of a cherry picked unit, with the sole purpose of having one decent unit reviewed by a trusted member of LPF.

600$ for this is an amazing price!

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

assuming power readings are correct...

I would also think this was a good deal, but don't know what the divergance is and WL laser builds can be poor.

a laser of similar strength would easily be $1000+

The Jetlasers has a 600mW 532nm for a lot less than 1,000$. I believe one member got it and it peaked over 1W and was stable at around 700mW.

Did you not read the first Post? Beam diameter and divergence are BOTH listed.

The lmping was done by cypragon...

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

Peak means nothing...

Divergence was measured at 1.9 mRad (listed in OP).

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

I am making NO guarantee on power. I could measure it 10 times and get 10 totally different graphs. Sometimes it hits 1.4W for a few seconds, sometimes it hovers at 0.3W. Here are two I made this morning.

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

it hits 1.4W

LOL... I should sell this on the other forum with only this information. ;)

Very interesting... thank you Cyparagon.

I wonder why the second run was so much higher than the first. Were they taken back-to-back? Could the blue line be attributed to a "warm-up" period???

Again, thanks for taking the time to plot this... you have gone well out of your way to help.

+1 (if that means anything from a noob ;) )

Edit: (more questions)

1. Why do you suppose the power fluctuates so much? Is it the driver with its on-board temp control that is causing this?

2. If this laser was torn apart, and outfitted with a different driver... could the stability be improved?

3. Lastly, I was wondering if someone here thinks they could "rebuild" this laser into a smaller host, with improved performance... possibly achieving a steady 1 Watt (I understand that may be a stretch). If so... please PM me with your idea, and maybe we could enter into a joint venture of sorts.

*cheers*

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

wow wth
"random output laser"!
maybe its just some connection issues that can be fixed?

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

That truly is one hell of a random laser output. Reminds me of my dealextreme violet 200mW, outputting 10mW the first day and 180mW the second and the third day 70mW.

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

I could be wrong, but I suspect the huge randomness in those Krapton power readings was due to temperature differences.

My Jetlasers PL-D was able to maintain a stable +670mW for 3 minutes straight at 67 degrees, but at 74 degrees it could only maintain that for 1.5 minutes before plummeting down to 450-500mW.

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

There was 10 minutes rest time between runs. The thermal shut-off starts kicking in around 80F, but it doesn't get that warm in <2 minutes.

1. That's just what happens when there's no active thermal regulation at higher powers. The choice of crystals also plays a role. It might decide to settle somewhere after 10 minutes, but people don't use these lasers like that. It also wouldn't make much sense considering the 25 minute battery life.

2. No.

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

Temperature does seem to have have quite an effect on output with the higher powered greenies.

The 300mW firedragon I picked up in the DD group buy used to peak as high as 800mW after it was allowed to sit in the freezer for ~15 minutes:p

Re: FS: <1W WL Krypton

doesnt that kill it? o.0

You would think so, but no.

I first noticed this after playing with it outside, when it was rather cold. The beam seemed to appear brighter.

So I went inside, and LPMed it, a minute or two after coming in...

The results were very pleasantly surprising.

So I decided to to a little experimenting... stuck it in the freezer for a few minutes at a time... and the lpm reading were consistently higher.

The danger comes more from condensation IMO than anything else.

On a side note, I've left lasers overnight in a car outside, when it was far below freezing on a few occasions now... so far no trouble fortunately.
