Max output for a 635 nm laser, while affordable?

Answer me this, knowing what you do now, and having seen 650 and own one already. Are you $200 impressed with this?

Yes, absolutely. I never have any desired to build another 650/660 now. And remember, I say that having invested $450 into this pursuit (since the first diode was no good - and I swear it wasn't me!)

In fact, I want to order a 2nd diode, build it in a cooler host, and run it at around 400mA. This really is a cool diode :)

I totally forgot, your at least $400 impressed with this! I want mine. Now. Gotta get un-broke

EDIT: also, this was supposed to do ~170mW at ~250mA, what do you make of that? Freak diode? bad spec sheet?

Hey, You Think you can Take a Longer beam shot of the 650nm/660nm next to your 635nm/637nm beast.:D

Longer as in longer exposure? Or longer as in to see more of the beam?

Preference for with / without glycerin in the air?

(If it's relative power you want to compare, I suggest the glycerin so that beam will show up better, and I can keep the lights on - all around better photograph)

always glycerin son!

@rhd---- I have no experience with DIY drivers, I like the store bought ones. When I get one of these, will a jib drive, modified to 350mA with two 16340's do the trick?

Thanks. Should Have been More specific.

Longer as in see the beam More.:)

You can take the Picture any way you think it will look better.:) If with Glycerin and the Lights on will make the picture better use that.:)

I really appreciate this. I cant Rep you again because i Just Rep'ed you 1 Hour Ago.:p

Wow, congrats! About the HL6388DG thing, we agreed a couple of pages back that they are multimode and divergent. Well, it it's not worse than a 445 I might get that one instead, gotta research a bit.

EDIT: Page 3 of this thread... HL6388DG-A is 11x40, 445 is 12x40, so it should be the same as 445... Hmm... I don't really plan in doing holography so I may get that instead. You have a much tighter beam with HL63133DG than HL6388DG-A would be ever capable of.

EDIT2: About these 622nm red/oranges, I know about about something from die4laser.

Jake:

Yep, that's a great driver choice. I'm going to order another 63133DG and push it a bit. God, I wish someone would do a murder fund on these! But in all seriousness, you should be ok to push yours to 350 at least based on MY experiences. Who knows though if maybe my diode was more (or even less hearty) than normal.

BUT, the datasheet lists 320 as a max, and that's going to be for commercial "long life / reliable" used. It's not a stretch to thing that 350 should be pretty doable. I mean if 350 was "death zone", I can't imagine Opnext telling their industrial partners that 320 would be a safe opporating current. I could be wrong though, but this logic tells me that 400 seems at least possible/reasonable.

Jib's driver would be a great bet. In fact, if you used 4 ohms of resistance, you'd get 312 mA which would be good.

Johnyz:

Right. I think what threw me off was that RPMCLASERS lists the HL6388DG as a single mode on their website. I think they're just wrong.

It has a bit worse divergence than 445s.... but you know what, that's not terrible. 445s are ok, and a bit worse would still be ok. Plus, for $125, and such a high power, that's attractive. I'm going to give one a shot :)

Cheers

As requested:

attachment.php

275mW 660nm LOC on the left
179mW 635nm HL63133DG on the right

Again, it's a pretty good depiction of the difference. If anything, it under-emphasizes the amount of difference my eyes see. But it's pretty good.

Lol, given that 445 looks purple to my phone cam, I wouldn't take the color representation too seriously. The intensity is pretty bang on though :)
