WTB: complete 1W package for a uni project

Every lab-style laser of comparable power that I've seen so far has been more expensive. Handheld lasers are available for quite a reasonable price. Set it up with a mount, and that's it. Problem?

Please don't take US for idiots.

This isn't about elitism. Nobody here is trying to prevent anyone else from entering the hobby.

But come at this genuinely. I'm sure you would have received genuine helpful responses if you had opened with:
"A science class at XYZ university wants to demonstrate the capabilities of high powered blue lasers at a science week event. What should we be aware of, and what precautions should we take in order to do this safely?"

But you didn't. You had a story. A story that was stupid, pardon my saying so.

• You claimed to "know very well of all the dangers associated with lasers", but you didn't actually demonstrate any of this knowledge.
• "There'll be plenty of information on safety" is a dumb thing to say, when you don't actually seem to be aware of safety yourself.
• You wanted a pair of glasses. We're to expect that you don't own a pair of glasses already, but you DO own things like beam dumps?
• "All beams will be pointed downrange". If so, why did you ask for a pointer and not a stationary lab unit?

Your comments just don't pass the sniff test. You didn't approach this from a perspective of honesty, you approached it with a big huge phony preface.

I can't stand it when communities and forums are hostile to newcomers. I hate it when people hold on to information as if it was an asset that looses value upon sharing. Elitism and snobbery is absolutely unwarranted, especially when we're all spread across the globe, across various social climates, at various stages of life, wealth, and education, anonymously engaging in dialog without regard, or need to have regard for, any real world statuses. Knowledge protectionism and hostility towards outsiders is unattractive and absolutely undesirable, period.

Having said that, I rarely see anyone here act hostile to a newcomer who has genuine interest in learning about lasers. That's nice - I'm pretty new here. Yet almost every day someone new arrives with a detailed "story", looking for a forum member to fast-track them straight to ownership of "A high power blue laser". So I say, thank god that our forum members reserve their hostility for the phony @$$holes like them.

There's nothing contradictory there, Sherlock. Pairs come up, then they go... if they're not bragging about how cool it is to everyone else then it's not going to create much interest. I'd be surprised if you had enough neurons between yourselves to rub them together and realise I could just BUY a high powered laser from any of the numerous online stores. Instead I offered the opportunity for someone here to show what they have, allowing us to acquire a higher quality build for our money.

You could do much more interesting things way more safely with a HeNe laser. Plus, they are excellent demonstrations of laser physics.

More importantly, have you fully cleared this with your University? Mine requires that all student-owned IIIb and IV systems be registered with the University. If you haven't jumped through the right hoops and show up with an obviously class IV laser device, you're going to end up in serious hot water.

Yeah. First offense trolls get a chance to learn. Oftentimes, young people don't even realize that they are trolling. They are just so used to the "entitled" treatment that they get from their parents and teachers that they just keep talking when they should just be listening. :tinfoil:

Sometimes they learn. Sometimes they just get angry and go away. Sometimes they just get more angry to have had more "restrictions" placed on them. If they return to the forum even more angry, then the real ban-hammer falls :eg:
