So I got a 6x diode from modwerx and a aixiz module. I was planning on selling it but I decided to keep it and try a youtube video I saw. So instead of using a microboost or flexdrive I decided to make a very cheap driver. So is my setup ok, and how would I go about putting it in a pen host?

The driver looks fine but with one nitpick. The LM317 is a voltage regulator not a resistor. Did you use flux when you soldered? It looks like you didn't. I didn't at first either but it made a huge difference when I started using it.

You're not going to be able to fit that into any pen host I've seen. (I've tried to fit a full sized LM317 into one before) The 'baby' LM317 I used in my red pen can't put out more than 100mA IIRC so it wouldn't be the best for this application plus it's probably cook itself. I built something similar to what you did tonight and will be posting a thread about it tomorrow if you want some ideas.

Just make sure you didn't overheat the diode when you soldered it.

If I put another resistor parallel to the one that is on now that will make it 5ohm so that will make it brighter right?

Depends on what resistor you are going to wire in parallel.
Right now: 1.25V/10ohm = 0.125A

Say you'd put another 10ohm resistor in parallel:

1/Rt = 1/10+1/10
Rt = 5 Ohm

1.25/5 = 0.250ma

You're welcome.

yes, but always check the current with a dummy load and DMM BEFORE you connect it to the laser

^^Yes. I have been running this exact set up in a couple for builds of mine. :)

If you power the whole thing from batteries, you might get away without any capacitors for filtering of spikes, but if you used some transformer/wall power supply, you
should add a capacitor or two, just like suggested in the original description
of the DDL driver ("... it can be done").

ok, but before I solder on the other resistor, the standard lens that comes with the aixiz module will be fine right? Or do I need a 445 lens:mad:

The standard will work with a 6x, but you will get a bit more power out of a glass lens coated for 405-445. If it was Me I would also add a filter cap when you solder the other resistor, but that's just me.

Aixiz ships fast if you want a glass lens. I might have a spare if you need one, and don't want to order.

I also want to mention that adding another 10ohm resistor will give you ~250mA witch is IMO way to much for a 6X.

Iam pretty sure the Safe current for those are 170mA. Maybe 180mA 190mA with the GGW.

Just My 2 cents.:)

lazeerer good catch I totally missed that. He needs to use a different resistor to up the power a bit.

+ Rep for you my man.

Won't let Me Rep you right now. Damn

Why do I need to use a different resistor, He only said if I put another 10ohm it will up the power to 250mA
