I just saw this on youtube. It seems that a new RC discipline has showed up lately. It consists in mounting a camera on an RC plane, a transmiter and some sensors, and to fly it with a special goggles that display what the plane sees. This way it's like being in a real plane.

Now the best part. They chase trains, cars, trucks... these planes can go as fast as 100km/h, in the last video they are even chased by a police helicopter! The bad side, the whole setup costs 3000$

1 mile range, this MUST be a lot of fun. I hope I had the money xd

I wonder what kind of time lag there must be between real time and the video you view. The system as a whole would be way less responsive than a video game would... wouldn't it?

Its about time they did this. I would fly the thing over a lake and dive bomb on weekenders in their boats.

Probably best if I never got one...

Ha that spinning antenna they had behind them was hilarious. That was a nice setup, I would love to see this on a EDF jet.

edit: was that an antenna or a wind indicator

Zomg ban then naow!!!! What if a terrorizer puts a bomb on one of em and flies into something ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I've been keeping tabs on this hobby for a while now, a a lot of people will put in a microcontroller and open-source autopilot software. I's pretty cool, and very easy to do if you know how to use an arduino. Homemade drones are pretty awesome :D and a new pre-assembled one was recently released that has a decent ARM cortex processor inside capable of image recognition :O very impressive!

Can't ban everything because it can be used for evil. You might not even need a camera & remote for a guided missile, drones can use GPS. Payload is limited on most I would think.

ARM cortex image recognition? Dude link!

While the video was pretty cool to, it seems like there was some pretty irresponsible flying going on. The plane got pretty close to the cars on the road and that could have distracted the drivers, causing an accident. It also flew pretty close to some people as well.

Well, they could have distracted drivers, yes, but all in all drivers can get distracted with a bird the same way...

I think this is totally real time. If it wasn't they wouldn't fly so near from the road etc...

:can:
I don't know about you but birds don't distract me all that much. Plus oddly they seem to avoid flying head on at me.
Now a fairly large RC plane buzzing by my car on the other hand...

Not here, when i walk and have some foods there always a dozen of birds sticking around me and trying to target me with their fecal substance.

wifi controlled via ipad/iphone/ipod, which are all a lot cheaper than a nice RC controller. AR.Drone.com – Parrot Wi-Fi quadricopter. Augmented Reality games on iPhone, iPod touch & iPad

The RC community is very safety-conscious, as are we. I'm sure they scouted it out before hand, as I saw no cars. My biggest concern was that he would crash the plane and it would get run over :undecided: that's at least a few hundred worth of gear (maybe a few thousand if he bought it from a company).
