It can:
-Pop Baloons
-Light maches
-Burn almost all black/dark plastic
-The beam is visible at night
-Scare my Science teacher :D
 





oohh cool!! What are you using to drive the diode? any idea on power output? Nice Work!! ;)
 
Yeah I called this the visa commercial without an ending. cept yoru list didn't come with prices... hehe.

A big cap, a 5 ohm Resistior, and little rechargable bats.
It workes, and Im' guessing 40-50 mW.

Im pretty sure its putting out more than that, measure the current at look at hemlock mikes graph for it, mine at 250ma was like 170mw i think.

I am guessing you are correct. Change the resistor to a 2.2 ohm resistor and use a pair of alkaline batteries. This will power the diode with ~160ma's which should give you close to 100mw's output.. ;) Of course eventually you really should use a driver.

How will 2.2 affect the power? Is it just a better choice? How will it change it?

it was 10 ohms.... Can I put 4 of these in paralell to make 2.5 ohms?
If not, does RaidoShack cary 2.2 ones?
Whats the power with a 10 ohm? Sounds like a lot less. :o
 
Yes you can put 4 10ohms in parallel to make 2.5 ohms. Radio Shack has 5 watt 1 ohm resistors. You could put two in series to make a 2 ohm resistor, but it would be overkill as you don't need 5 watt resistors. So for now the best thing to do is use 4 10ohm resistors in parallel.
