Ok guys, I would like some prices on a driver specifically designed for an 808nm diode (1W / 2W) The working voltage of the diode is around 2v and i would like to use a USB port to power it up (Around 5v) Any ideas on prices or locations / information etc. Cheers!

I don't think a USB port can put out enough current to power up a big IR laser diode.

I just did a simple Google search for USB limits...
(am I the only one that knows how to do this)............. ::)

A 1 Watt 808nm LD has a Threshold current of 300mA and an
operating current of 1.4 Amperes...  :o

For a Watt 808nm LD... you can just double those numbers...

There is no way a USB port will power those LDs...IMO.. 8-)

jerry i think you lost a "2"... ;)

usb gives you 2.5W of power, at least it should. so if you want to power a 1W ld you would need a driver with an efficiency of at least 40% (should be possible IMHO, but i have no numbers to prove this). for a 2W ld your driver needs to be more than 80% efficient.

or you find a ld that runs at 5V with 500mA, that you could hook up directly to your usb port... :)

be careful with your usb though, a friend tried to built a usb-powered tattooing machine, and ended up with a fried onboard usb controller... lucky for him the rest of his mainboard was still working :)

:-? Ok that just shows how much electronically minded i am lol I bought a red 5mW diode from a guy on ebay and hooked it up to a USB lamps circuit and it ran...
Cant i do this with a 1W diode that runs at 2v ? OR does the amps make it work? lol i dunno wtf im talkin about as u can see ;D

The "amps" are much more important than the voltage when using laser diodes. Your best bet for a simple driver that will handle the current needed for an 808nm diode of that power level is an LM317 or "DDL" driver. They're simple and can be made from about $10 worth of radio shack parts. They can handle up to 1.5 Amps of current. You can search the forum for "DDL circuit" for more info. Just make sure you use enough heatsinking on the LM317 since it will get quite hot at these power levels.
