WOW crazy blu-ray

Of course I'm not joking. YOUR POT=1000 OHM POT ;D
And pots aren't supposed to do that unless they have as many ohms as yours. ;D
Some pots have the tendency to drop to zero when you get close to no resistance, like 3 ohms and below.

haha its ok. But these came STRAIGHT from Daedal. They SHOULD be the correct kind. and it sounds like exponential, but its not. I takes FOREVER for the current to reach 10 mA, and then from there it goes quickly until it jumps straight from 30mA to 80mA. and then when it is at 80mA, it is very fickle, and it jumps around even then. anywhere from 60 to 90mA.

Audio taper pots are a little unusual these days.. Especially in trimmer pots. I suspect its just very twitchy because your at the extreme end of its range.

Then I think daedal made a mistake. :o
Just pm him, tell him what's going on and I think he'll get you the right pot.

He could have gotten confused like me  ::)
Hey, don't worry everybody makes mistakes. Even I (the perfect chido) make mistakes. ;D

haha maybe! well I'll PM him right now and see.

I just sent him one, so we'll see what happens when he reads it :)

LOGARITHMIC!

That's the word I was looking for... bah!  :P

oh, well i sent Daedal the link to this thread, so he'll read that and understand, cause I said exponential in my PM lol.

but thanks for all your help!
and I need to sleep now!!!!

Alex

All right good luck then, I have to keep doing homework. :(
Oh and my name is Alex too. :o

I'm pretty sure if Daedal sent the wrong pot, he'll make good on the pot. But we ourselves have to take responsibility to check the current before we connect the diode. I have killed a few LD's. It's a bad feeling.

Just thought I would share this pot that I found:

It is excellent for making a blu-ray driver that you can adjust. (I am still trying to make a 50mW burner from a Blu-Ray writer)
blu-ray driver.jpg

It is 50 ohms, 1/4 watt. So, just use it for blu-ray drivers, or currents up to 200mA.
What is really nice about it, is that it is a 12 turn pot. This gives you very fine adjustment control of the current!
For the DDL style blu-ray driver, I just use the pot and the LM317. (no other resistor - thanks for that suggestion Gazoo)

I assume then that these are single turn pots :-/ , I find that even with 25 turn 100ohm ones the adjustment is quite coarse...

I know it is a little late this time around, but you would do better to do the tests suggested in ........

http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1197651171
(for testing BR diodes replace the 4 diodes with a 100ohm resistor ).

If everything checks out, attach your LD....... If it doesn't do what you expect adding the BR will not make it work. I hate hearing about people killing their LD's, we all know just how much they cost. :'(

IMPORTANT!:
If you are making a Blu-ray you don't even need the pot. You need a 33 ohm resistor, NOT the 2 10 ohm resistors. If you had the 33 ohm resistor, it wouldn't have been able to get that high in the first place regardless of what pot you had. You're pot should be bale to go to 0 ohm without killing the diode.

That is unless you get a diode like the one I recently harvested. It requires 50 to 55ma's before it starts to lase.

I'm very sorry it took me this long to reply here... but this is straitened out.

I'm very sorry for my mistake... :-[

The local electronics store has them in little trays, and I just snagged a bagful... seems some of the 1000's were marked as 100's!! Ya, well... if you got a pot form me and it's not a 100-Ohm, let me know. I'll send you a new pot. I'm ordering a batch from Digikey... not buying from that place... not to give to others at least...

Sorry about that;
DDL
