Any laser >1mW gets confiscated by Customs in Australia, usually with a warning for 1st timers but I guess if they wanted to make an example you could be fined

Steve guarantees the delivery of the laser, even if he's in Australia.

Sounds promising, although I still think it may get taken. Seing you are in communication with Steve, can you ask him, if the laser happens to be taken by customs, that he guarantees a full refund.

He said he'd guarantee the laser getting to you, so I'm pretty sure he'll keep on sending it 'till it gets there. Just let me know and I'll put you down for one :)

I was actually considering buying one also. I would try taking it apart and seeing if I could replace the pump diode and crystal. Interesting...
