Wicked laser - laser dock

Re: Wicked Laser's LaserDock

Thanks for merging the three threads

:wtf:

WL can certainly afford to fund their own design of a controller, and shouldn't need to involve indiegogo in anyway.

I can't wait until people order only to realize you need a projector to go along with it... after delivery sometime in 2018.

Yeah, there's no way is pay $400 for that!

Just going to quote myself from the other thread ... Also, can we pick a thread? :D

Just going to stick to this thread...

So basically, just a DAC/Software combination that doesn't have half the features of other similarly priced (or even cheaper!) DAC/software combinations.

Saying that - Swamidog mentioned on the Facebook laserists group that he's had one for a while and is actually quite impressed by it. If anyone knows laser shows it's him! Edit: had a chat with him via PM, he said it's quite good for just sticking some music on and chilling or whatever - that sounds quite good. Sort of set it and forget it - not sure how other software/DAC combinations compare there but last time I used QuickShow (~4 years ago now) it wasn't great if that's what you were going for.

Some more discussion from those more "in the know" than most of the members here (myself included) - no offence to anyone intended of course.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/Laserist/?fref=nf <-- May be a closed group ... can't remember if you'll be able to see anything without joining.

Also, isn't it $300? I thought the $400 option is if you wanted it sooner?

diachi? you on laserists? That thread was sooo long. I was the one that mentioned how they put a laser on a shark. Mr perry and swami had a nice conversation... hehe.
I am kind of on the fence with this product. For one it costs waaay too much. Spend another 100$ and get quickshow. This company has also seemed to have caused a lot of regulations in the US.
I do like how "sound active" it is. most of the time on QS you can only really set things to the beat, so it wont react to highs and mids unless you program it to.
HMU diachi.. maybe were already FB friends and don't know it

Yeah I'm on there! I sent you a message ... I think it's you anyway.

Yeah, that remained surprisingly civil haha!

On the fence too, looks like a cool idea but seems rather expensive for what it is. No doubt Pangolin will offer similar functionality soon if they don't already (With sound activation instead of just tapping space to the beat like the current VDJ) - in which case you'd be better off with QS, IMO.

Don't have you on FB, as I said, think I sent you a message... :p

Re: WickedLasers

thanks diachi,

i've just received the new version (usb instead of ethernet). my first impressions are the frame rate is higher and there's less latency between the audio and the laser projected visualization.

i will post a full review in the next week or so after i've had some time to play with the new unit. i will also bring one to SELEM if anyone wants to check it out. i like it a lot, some of the visualizers are really nice and it's great to hang out and chill to when i want some eye candy but don't want to spend a month programming a show.

for the sake of full disclosure, they sent me one to provide an unbiased review of and that is exactly what i will do.

That's actually a fairly good deal IMO. Assuming it's fairly balanced RGB and not 800mW Blue/100mW Green/100mW Red, like I see some Chinese manufacturers doing... That ends up being about ~300mW balanced white...

If it's balanced, it would be a good deal I agree, but this is WL we're talking about, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's not, and also underspec across the board.

There are no details at all about the pj.

I located some specs on their indiegogo page, which shows that as mentioned by Diachi, the blue is much higher. Is it safe to assume that because of this, it's a cheap laser, and the $400 deal is in fact still crappy?

The solid-state RGB module excels in efficiency and operating lifetime compared to previous-generation DPSS modules. The dichroic optics can be easily adjusted by removing the beam alignment panel.

That's a cute little PJ...

Actually a fairly reasonable deal - terribly unbalanced - but ends up cheaper than buying a similar (Although better quality) projector from China - without a DAC or any other accessories with it. Although those usually do have a DMX/Auto mode built in - which isn't great - I'd expect WLs product to be much better than built in DMX/Auto shows that come with cheap projectors.

D-RGB1000

Really don't like when such an unbalanced projector is advertised as "800mW". I could build a "5W RGB" with 4.9W blue, 50mW G and 50mW R - it'd still be 5W but that's a bit misleading...

Also:

Just got this PM from Mixedgas on PL (LSRFAQ here).

You might want to mention this on LPF

I Quote the Wicked Laser Web Site

Yes, non-US customers may select the Laser Projector perk to receive our 1W RGB laser projector that uses only pure-diode laser sources and thus have great beam specifications with beautiful analogue color modulation.
It's perfect for homes and small venues. Since we don’t ship the US, once you purchase a LaserDock Perk, we will send you a link to our wholesaler who ships worldwide.
Note that this perk does not include the LaserDock.
