this is how much Ram firefox is using as I start to type this message.

Ok so recently I've been realizing that firefox has been making my computer very very slow. especially when i watch youtube videos they lag horribly! I checked my task manager and firefox was using 800mb of RAM!!! the number seemed to keep rising too! On the Average I have about 10 tabs constantly open.. usually more when there are lots of new topics here on LPF, but in the end I'm back to about 10.
I tried a test... 2 actually...
my first test is opening all 3 browsers (chrome, firefox, and opera), Open 10 tabs, then simply go to the task manager to check how much RAM each is using. my second test it periodicly glancing at the task manager as i type this message.

that is how much firefox is at now. I have done NOTHING with firefox, I'm typing this message on chrome.. the number seems to rise on it's own! It's like it's storing an infinite cache!

Now let's look at the other browsers... I've let them sit for a while with 10 tabs open...
chrome - 43,620k
opera - 99,312k
firefox - 182,314k

after about an hour or less of browsing firefox usually makes it to 800,000k+. Is this happening for anyone else?

lol god... if u wanna get rid of the data online with firefox... i found out that if u go to "tools"... the 2nd choice from the bottom on mine says "clear private data" if u click it itll have a list of things u can check to clear, just dont clear off the password... cuz u might not remember your passwords (like what i did...)

i always do it after im done bein online and i usually keep the check marks on "browsing history" "save form and search history" "cache" "cookies" (yum) "offline website data" and "authenticated sessions"... then it takes off where uve been n stuff... might help with the lag

meh I usually have 30+ tabs open (i read a lot of webcomics and manga plus youtube and stuff) right now with 57 tabs firefox is taking up 330mb of ram and i've left my computer on for about 3 days now

Ahhh... Not quite sure if you got his point...?
He does not want to get rid of his personal data, he is concerned about the memory firefox uses, as it tends to increase to very high values...

When I used firefox, I never noticed any laggs, but I never checked the memory it used.

I use Opera, and it rocks! It is using 94k kbytes at the moment, I have 7 tabs open.
Though I never have to care, I have 6000k Kbytes Ram ;D

While I get your point, I don´t quite understand you problem. You have opera and chrome installed, so why don´t you use them?
Do you need some special extensions?

did I forget to mention that when I closed out all my tabs but 4, it was still using 800mb??

_______

well i really like firefox, there's a spellcheck, lots of plugins. I mainly use the SpeedDial plugin that opera uses.

Opera is nice but as far as I know there is no spellcheck.

chrome is great! everything about it, I just need to look more into it to see if I can customize the home page like a speed dial.

I am not a programmer (I know -- shocking isn't it?), but from what I've read, FF has a tendency to "collect" available memory and hold onto it. The longer it is "on" the more memory it "collects."

Peace,
dave

so I assume there is a way to disable this? I think I'll do some googling now and see what I can find out.

also I found a flaw with google chrome. The spellcheck sucks. there is like 100 words in it's dictionary lol. some words I spell right and it underlines it, and usually when it does underline a word I right click and there are no corrections avaible.

I have Firefox open with one tab from Youtube and it is taking up 71,748KB. I have 11 tabs open in Chrome and it is taking up roughly 99,000KB. :-/

well a thing that may be overlooked is (AT LEAST WITH MY 2 COMPUTER)

chrome makes a new process for every tab you have open.

firefox keeps one. so really all the chrome processes add up to be a lot more than the 1 firefox process with mutliple tabs

That happens to me sometimes too, with the 800Mb of Memory or something else high.

It's worse when I actually close all of FireFox windows and it's STILL there. Sometimes I have to go use Task Manager to wipe it, since there is no other way to 'close' it. I hate doing that though because whenever FireFox closes unexpectedly it wipes the cache. This is stupid, since cache is saved on the harddrive and not the memory.

Does anyone know how to stop FireFox wiping my cache every time I have to close it 'unexpectedly' ?

I bet everyone on this forum has at least 256mb ram :-D More likely to be 512
I have 6GB ;)

More likely to be 512Mb or RAM? lol, you can't barely run XP on that much.

I've got 2 GB of RAM myself. Since I use a laptop, not a desktop computer, that's pretty decent. It works for everything I need it to do :P
