hey everyone, i am building a laser spirograph soon and was wondering which potentiometers to use to control the fans.... i have 3 12v fans that draw 220mA each. so what potentiometers could i use to control them?

thanks,
stuart :)

If these are fans like the ones from PCs they are not reversable. Many more efx can be done if you can reverse and slow down your motor/mirrors. IIRC - you should get DPDT Switches that will allow you to both stop and reverse your mirrors instead of just off and on.--hk

already tried with motors... and failed miserably  so i think the fans would be better for me, also do radioshack ship worldwide?... im in the UK.

I cut the blades off my fans- not needed and they tend to ruin the 'whispy' efx of my fogger. Fans work great for tunnel and liq. sky--but for Liq. sky don't wasre yr time trying to mount more than one FS mirror as you will just get more than one line- not a cool as just one....also I paint the back and edges w/ flat black paint - makes a better cleaner line.

would i be able to use a 100ohm potentiometer with the fans?

From what I read- not so well-- GreenM says the old style ceramic rheostats do work but are both harder to find and more expensive--only one on feeBay is $18 or best offer. Motor controllers can be gotten in kit form and ready-to-use for about the same. Dakota is working on building some so PM him. I am sure many can DYI as well

do buy anything from the crap shack i use them as a reference for you to go to your local supplier or eBay-china and order a similar item. you could try a 100ohm pot nothing bad will happen.
i would tell you you will get tons more patterns if you can get motors that are reversible.
Just buy a cheap dc motor and a gear then glue the mirror to the gear with a light offset. very quick and cheap.

i think im just going to buy one off dakota when i get some money, got to get an LPM (HLPM-II) from lasersbee first ;)

stuart :)
