I am in the market for a new diode for my next build project. I want the highest power green laser diode which from my quick research is 1W. I noticed there are two 1W diodes and also a 700mW one. The two 1W ones are the NUGM01 and NDG7475 and the 700mW one is the NDG700, all are 520nm in wavelength. Has anyone had first hand experience with all three of these and if so what do you think are the pros and cons of each, differences?

The NDG7475 is the best choice, as it nominally outputs around 1.4W along with the NUGM01T. They both cost around the same as well. But with the NDG7475, you have the additional lottery of bagging yourself a efficient 1.6W diode. But should be noted, that you shouldn't expect it. As for the NDG700, it isn't safe to run past 1W. Both the NDG7475 and the NUGM01T need appropriate heatsinking when overdriven.

NDG7475 is currently the strongest and has better divergence than the NUGM01 from what I have read.

Hi,
yes if this is your first 520 get the 7475 it won't let you down . I have all the 520's DTR sells and by far the 7475 is awesome. And yes it needs a host with good sinking nothing cheesy . Do it right it is a costly diode and be good to it, they are very bright and a beautiful WL..

Agreed, definitely go with the NDG7475 if you can, although it probably won't be a lot more visible than the NDG700.
One other thing is that the NUGM01 has a Gball lens attached, and if you remove it to use a G-2 or similar lens for focusing, the diode becomes open can, and is much more susceptible to to damage.

Sounds good to me guys, looks like the NDG7475 is the clear winner. Does this diode get very hot quickly? Can you guys recommend a minimum heatsink size and duty cycle or compare how hot it gets as opposed to the NUBM44?

I just ran a quick test of my 7475 (2.4A, S4X host). After 1m 30s it got slightly warm, after 3m it was pretty warm but not hot. So the heatsinking problem is much less dire than that of the 44. I think it would be good for a Luke ROTJ build!

Does the NDG7475 have IR bands in its spectrum? I don't want to risk damaging my eyes so would it be worth it to put in an IR filter?

Do you know how DPSS lasers work and the difference between DPSS and direct diode...? :confused:

I was thinking due to the many layers of semiconductors in the diode that there would possibly be additional bands in the spectrum. Seeing as how this is a high powered diode in all and most likely uses multi quantum states

Whilst it is possible (more with the red diodes), it is unlikely to cause you a problem. The 520 diode is InGaN and primarily operates in the lower end of the spectrum. It is even less likely that a well made diode will output ir as well as visible. I haven't done too much research into diode technology but I'm sure most diodes don't output ir unless defective.
