What is your current job?

Graduate student in materials science, working on gallium nitride-based diode lasers towards a Ph.D. Like most graduate programs in engineering, being a graduate student is half student and half research assistant, so that's what I am, although I'm more student than researcher at the moment. Like in most good engineering programs though, I do enough research work to pay for all the education stuff, as well as enough for a nice stipend on top of the free education (my stipend is actually almost exactly the same per year as my wife's full time job).

Graduate school rocks, especially when it's an an engineering area where there is plenty of funding. If anyone is interested in science or engineering graduate school, I would be more than happy to help.

Dave I was a Aircraft Electrician, 10 years. I worked on Phantom's for 8 of those. I knew the electrical system on that plane like the back of my hand. I use to hang out in debriefing to troubleshoot the squawk codes the pilot made even before he landed. I was at Ramstein for 3 years, from there I went TDY all over Europe and the Middle East. Been a civilian since 89' and have worked as a electronics tech every since.

I had alot of respect for the SP's. They froze there ass's off while we sat in the warm truck. I also learned the hard way...don't mess with em'. They took there job very seriously. I laid on the tarmac, face down with a M16 pointed at the back of my head for 30 min's cuz I dropped my line badge and didn't know it. The B52 I was working on was hot. I was pissed but I realize now they were doing there job and I was at fault.
The Air Force gave me focus, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Ok, enough of that, back to your regular scheduled program.

Consulting Arborist - not too many know what that is, so: I figure out stuff about trees. Why is it sick / how to make it better; risk evaluation / prevention ("that branch is going to fall on your house within 5 years"); construction planning (to protect trees and buildings from each other); backhoe monitoring ("wait - I see a big root coming, we need to hand-dig here!" "watch yer head, Treebeard!"); some research with University people (UCD); appraisals (usually a loss-in-value); and by far the most interesting - detective work: why did that tree fall? who should have known? Are those cracks in the swimming pool from tree roots?

before that I was a computer programmer / systems analyst for 25 years...
and a furniture maker... and an organic farm manager... wilderness skills teacher... etc.

I'm a little surprised at the number of students. That should serve as a compliment to some of you ;-)
(because I didn't figure you for that young you seem more mature than others)
