What IS going on?

What's Going On?
Currently Active Users: 13708 (385 members and 13323 guests) (at around 01:15 GMT, 1st January 2013)
I have noticed how many GUESTS there are, and there is always a lot of (without meaning to offend anybody) 'lurkers'. I think that we need to come up with an initiative to get those people to register. So, any ideas?

I was a 'lurker' for nearly a year before i became a member, reading posts and looking at projects was just fine for me.

The "online now" numbers are rigged by showing everyone that was online in the past 24 hours.

If it was scaled back to active users in the last 15 minutes (like most forums), the numbers would be much more reasonable.
