What ever happened to VSCEL laser diodes? They seemed efficient and promising.

n 2007, more than 200 W of CW output power was reported from a large (5 × 5mm) 2D VCSEL array emitting around the 976 nm wavelength,[7] representing a substantial breakthrough in the field of high-power VCSELs. The high power level achieved was mostly due to improvements in wall-plug efficiency and packaging. In 2009, >100 W power levels were reported for VCSEL arrays emitting around 808 nm.[8]

What ever happened to VSCEL laser diodes? They seemed efficient and promising.

They are still around in IR applications, and actually making quite a impact.

They're harder to make than edge-emitters, but they are still around. Edge emitters are just easier and cheaper.

I suppose the technologu was abandod for pump diodes in favour of edge-emitting devices. This doenst mean we won't be seeing any further developmnt though - perhaps they will be useful for projectors and such at some point in the future,

I wouldn't bet on it. Diode arrays are cheap.

I'm not betting on anything... but he technology may just find new applications, even if it has been abandonded for a while. For now, projection is done with multimode side emitters, but there will be a point where better resolutions are required, going back to single mode units. That could easily take a decade
