I'm not much of a computer person but I was wondering, how much it might cost and how much work it would involve, for LPF to have their own Photo Sharing app/site. I've had, as have many other, their pictures deleted from their posts by Photobucket. I'm planning, little by little to try and re-post what pictures I can find, but am a little nervous about another photo-sharing site deciding to pull the stunt Photobucket did. So I was wondering if there's any chance/way LPF could come up with their own? :)

BobMc,

I went ahead and moved your thread to the "Help, Suggestions & Admin. Announcements" section, you had it in "General". :)

Hi Bm,
I was fed up with these resizing sites , so i have a Cannon elph and i set it to 600X800 for my shots. I plug in my camera hit photos on my PC and they download. Then when i want to post a pic i write the post and go to advanced and i click on one of the 8 windows and my photos come up then i choose one . then hit upload on the advanced . then you can preview the post or submit.
No third party can do what they did to a lot of LPF members. If your reading my post you can click on the pic ,then when it comes up you can click on it again and it enlarges. Press the easy button its fast and easy and no BS..
Just machined this 7875 build for a customer

Rich:)

That is a idea Rich. Might go that route?

Nice 7875 build, somebody's got a beauty heading their way. :gj:

@Hap, going to definitely try to post some real beautiful beams of a 2.6 watt 532nm lab laser. :)

Something like that would be great, Bob, I'd be all for that, one stop shopping! I'll bet we probably won't see that happen though. I'm in the same boat as you, trying to re-post my "lost" photo's a little bit at a time.
As you know, it's a long, slow process though, so far I've just replaced the photos all the threads that I've started, around 360 of them so far!

Bob I manage to get pics up just using my LG G3. All my build threads are done from my phone.

I gonna have to see if I can figure this out. If I can learn to post from my phone that would be soooo sweet. No third party vender at all. Gonna have to put my thinking cap on! Thanks dden. :)

As a web developer i could say some things about this:

There is the cost of developing the platform, and that of hosting it.

The cost of developing it is not that great, in the order of $500 to $1000, depending on what features you want for it (filesize resitriction, dmca reporting, mobile compatibility and what not).

The monthly cost of hosting it would depend totally on the number/size of photos stored on there and on how often they are viewed. Both storage space and bandwidth do cost money.

As far as makng one stricly for LPF: you'd need to build something that uses lpf credentials to be able to post. I'm not sure if the forum platform here provdes something like that at all.

Well that sounds interesting, about how much would it cost for storage?
Wondering if we had 10 members willing to put in 100 dollars each. It's something that would be achievable. Wondering if, in the long term if it would be worth it? Thanks from your input Benm. Food for thought.

I believe vBulletin does allow for photo uploads, but it's not very user friendly. Software really wouldn't take much to do since plenty exists.

As Benm mentions, the storage and bandwidth are the cost factors. These wouldn't be very predictable values, and pricing varies between hosts.

I don't think this is a fair request to make of anybody though. Monthly costs may increase, and if people didn't keep paying in, somebody would be stuck with the bill. Adding it to LPF might require a lot more ads. It wouldn't self-support on its own if it was just for us.

In the end, photos would be just as likely, if not more, to disappear.

Really, I'd recommend using imgur if you want something user friendly with good app integration. Link resizing is provided which makes forum use very easy. It's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Adding your photos to Google Photos is super easy and convenient for backup and album sharing, but I don't think you can count on embeddable photos.

You are so correct Rivem, if it wasn't a one time payment and had to get paid every month or so. Somebody sooner or later would get stuck with the bill. If it's not something that could be put in place an owned by LPF it wouldn't work. Was hoping it was something that could just be bought/paid for, and be LPF's to use as they please. Looked really good on paper though. :)

Could be wrong, but I was under the impression that LPF already hosted pictures? The system is not very user friendly and the file size, and dimensions, very restrictive, but the feature is there.

Personally I would love to just see those restrictions increased somewhat, and for autoresizing to be introduced for ease of use.

Alternatively, agree with Rivem, imgur is currently my go to "easy" option, and I use a combination of amazon and google for backup storage.

It does, but along with the limitations you mentioned, I'm pretty sure they also expire eventually like nearly every other vBulletin site.
