You can get a crate 572 from GM as well as many others but the 572 is under 1.5 to 1 rod to stroke ratio which for 20k is not what I want, actually when putting a 400 crank in a 350 to make the 383 you still have to notch the block so the rods are sure to clear, and this is my problem with stroking too far, when you go less than a 1.5 to 1 rod to stroke ratio you get excessive skirt loading that can cause vibes and crack your skirts as well as causing early sleeve wear, this is why ocean going ships have a double articulated rod, the piston has a fixed rod that won't move, no wrist pin, but there's a wrist pin at what would be the crank throw that is articulated on a 2nd rod that attaches to the crank throw, this way the piston moves straight up and down with zero side loading, hell it would shatter the rings in those big monsters, another problem with stroking is piston feet per minute, oils can only keep the rings floating just so fast, another reason for more pistons to increase displacement over longer strokes and why v-12's with smaller bores can rev so high, it's the same piston feet per minute at a higher RPM with a shorter stroke as a longer stroke with a lower RPM.

Great stuff:)
Any links that show the rod setup on the ocean ships?
Red I don't know or remember what you did for work with the majority of your living but you and "Lifetime" have to be the most all around knowledged craftsman iv'e seen. You guys tackle everything:):) Probably the 2 most house bound working stations I would want to see..

You are much too kind, I am nothing special at all, seriously not at all.
We all thirst for knowledge and there is still an awful lot that I want to learn, but an old man once said this to me and I paused before arguing the point but soon found in my thinking that I could not contest his statement. " Knowledge is power and it's knowledge that makes the money. "

Think about it and how it could be wrong, it's not.
So you need money to make money.....yes, but if you know what others don't then you know how to make things happen that others can't and if you know how to play your cards you can find investors who want to profit on your knowledge and will pay you well, and if you're smart they will pay you very well because you knew to feed them slowly and held on to the trump cards that make you extremely valuable once there invested and thirst for your know how even more.

See I went straight to a greed motive to make my point, but we are by nature greedy, our value of self preservation helped get us to the top of the food chain and we all still have it, too much really, did you ever watch that show Deal or no Deal ? It should have been called GREED because I would think some of those people would be smarter or at least good at math, it's like strutting into a casino feeling positive that you can break the bank ignoring all the sad faces walking out, if you don't see them the first few times you will see notice them later LOL

Point is we can do anything and one day when a man loses an eye a doctor will clean things up and inject some programed stem cells that will weave in a new eye cell by cell from nutrients in your blood just like when you were in the womb and in a few weeks the patch comes off and the man say : Dammit doc, I wanted blue not brown. " My point is it will be as common as anything is now and taken for granted because we know how to do that and there is so much more.

Unlimited lifespans are possible as every cell is self replaceable/repairable if our body knows how and we can teach it, of course it is a multilayered problem, shortened DNA strands/telomers, cellular garbage buildup, ect... but I wont go into that now, point is we will one day solve it after a lot of learning.

Matter is energy and energy is matter, neither is ever lost or gained it simply changes form. You know how we use chemical energy by burning distilled dinosaur muck and someone might think all that gasoline burned up, but it's still here it turned from solid to gas and particulate when chemical bonds were converted to energy, if that same gasoline was converted to energy on an atomic level via. fusion it would have been converted to an immense amount of heat ( energy ) just like if the gas and particulate was converted through fusion, the chemical bonds we break down are very small by comparison, extremely small, we are still in the stone age by comparison.

Sorry to be long winded, anyway once we master things we will be able to turn dog droppings to gold but we wont as gold wont be anything special and that will also be a problem, but it will work out sooner or later as we go around and around, well we ( you and I ) will be dead in a blip by comparison, but the things people will one day do is almost limitless, I sure wish we would stop wasting so much time so we could see some of it, sadly we must 1st evolve and I fear that while technology is marching forward that humanity is headed for a remedial course.

50 years before I was born people were still riding animals to work, when I was born we rode a rocket to the moon, and now 50 years later ......well a lot has changed but our understanding or ourselves and what drives hasn't changed as we are still going around and around, can socialism work ? Is that our next test as the world follows the USA and machines replace human workers the social landscape is changing as everything will change, the question is will we find balance as we march forward sooner or later ? Around and around it will go, knowledge ignored will be offered up again and again, sometimes at great cost and pain until we take it all in and understand how to get there, and the more of us who understand the better, the more we know the better we all will do, and sadly I lack so much but I want to learn, just imagine if we lived 300 years 500 years how much we could know and what we would have to work with, that may be what has to change 1st before our next big leap.

Here's an image, you can click the pic to make it bigger, see the piston way up top? Now that's a long stroke and the most efficient use of the expanding gas and the piston only moves straight up and down, performance engines with over square bores are wasteful so efficiency and longevity are the main concerns and the reason for this set up, but it will also run for decades all day long day after day > https://marine.mandieselturbo.com/i...gines-systems/two-stroke/g95me-c.png?sfvrsn=4

^^^^^^^This^^^^^^^^
Perfect example as it's just about a thesis someone would write for a PHD degree.. Reminds me of a episode of Mash where the guy out doctored Hawkeye and did every other profession like a lawyer, scientist etc yet never got or cared for or wanted to go through the process of a degree.. Alaskan did say he was impressed with your quick wit when you met up a few years ago. Those words always stuck with me..
Ok i'm getting a bit mushy and corny;) but admire your huge I guess variety of hobbys and interests.
People can read all day and absorb info but doesn't mean they can do it. I use to think just because someone was smart enough to be a doctor meaning their IQ and grades were at another level beyond the norm that they could learn anything, yet iv'e talked to doctors who couldn't check the oil in a car or change a light bulb or even hang their degree on the wall:giggle:. Why isn't that part of their brain affected with wisdom??

Anyway'sss................. on the ships crankshaft, is it a half plane rotation right?

and a good ratio over square engine with taller and skinny intake ports can make monster torque and horsepower up top. That Electra 225 you had was a 4.3215 x 3.90 rated at 510 ftlbs of it:) Now the Olds 455 was way under square with a not so friendly and limited revving at 4.1 x 4.25.

Yes a longer stroke adds leverage and will be more efficient while a shorter and even over square will make fast revving power but is less efficient, not that efficiency matters to performance as much but for automakers who need to meet fuel efficiency and emissions it matters, that's why so many new cars have a full time turbo such as fords ecoboost. Forced induction increases volumetric efficiency and makes big power that is on demand power so you can scoot around on a smaller engine yet power is on tap when you need it. Then there's the atkins cycle engines with a longer power stroke only, that's a funky looking design but it saves a few percent and is an option for many new car lines.

It marks a passing of time and feels a bit sad that our beloved big American thumpers that make axel snapping torque off idle are all but gone from the factory lineup, there some decent size mills still being produced, but the cubic inch wars ended long ago and if you want to see a mountain motor you will have to get something like a Keith Black or Reher Morrison custom because GM is not going to be bringing any new 700 cid mills to market, it really isn't needed as the trade off in weight isn't worth it anyway and with forced induction they can make more power than you have traction, the dodge demon is nice to see and sounds good, but future AWD electrics will outperform it in every way expect for the wonderful sounds we grew up, maybe we can have some digital audio play over the stereo when we nail it in our electric sports cars, some digital BOO WHAAA sound just for old time sake.

p.s. I'm pretty sure the ship engine has a cross plane crank, its a turbo charged 2 stroke diesel IINM

Here's some video that's fun to look at>

Holy cow thats something else..
One of the security guards in my building has a 1974ish F140 regular 2 wheel drive pickup with a nothing special transplanted 302 2 bl but it has a true dual exhaust with probably cheapie Autozone mufflers and that exhaust note just brings me back to the day.:)
I haven't fired up my old ride in probably at least 15 years but it's basicly just open exhaust manifold's now as all the pipes and mufflers are rotted out.

On top of that sweet loby idle, look at the size of the header tubes!! That 502 has some deep deep breathing.
Looks like it's got to have the whole setup of tubular arms and the whole Hotchkit's setup.
It's not a old school 1970 riding A body thats for sure. :)

Red, just a first test run on some new billet heads that even have water jackets.. Some parts used that were laying around to make do.
555 ci. 1061 NA hp. "This block can be setup to do 732ci" Ok it's not gonna be cheap but not as expensive as some might think according Ken Betts the builder. He is I believe one of the original guy's from when the Kenny-Bell company was formed in the late 60's, now building Ford upgrades and blowers IIRC.
The Block is AL made from TA performance as it was on hand which had something like 300 passes on it before any needed freshening. Ken is in the making a steel severe heavy duty block..
If anything else it's good reading and good pic's and torque and horsepower relationships. These heads aren't even ported or played with.

Yes drag racers build mountain motors and can make big power NA and even more with force induction but for a street car forced induction on a stock LS bottom end will do 1000hp, there's no single correct way but cost is often a factor as is driveability and room under the hood in a street car, typically bigger is better for drag racing but not always the best choice for a daily driver, both engines will strain street tires and stock suspension, both will run faster times with tire and suspension upgrades, really the whole car is a balanced package matched to the use and with forced induction you can cruise around all day and still have 1000 hp on demand and on pump gas/E85 but the old school mountain motors with a carb often drink the race gas and hunt/chop around town needing a big stall converter if running an automatic, but again there's no 1 right way to do it although there are reasons to go 1 way or the other.

So maybe the big buick can drive around town reasonably tame, how about if we need 1500 or 2000 HP and want to drive around town as well with AC and all the gadgets ? Check this >

---edit---

Here's the one you were talking about, cool mill but......what the hell are those up top ? Are those carburetors ? My lawnmower has a carburetor LOL :D

To be 100% honest I must say I like the big motors myself, but if I were going to hotrod most any of this centuries cars I would likely get a turbo or centrifugal and flash the ECM, now if I bought a 50 year old chevy I would go old school gen V

Actually I will make a confession, I am ready to play with some used electric cars, but it's going to be a while and by then it may be illegal unless you replace the entire operating system and get yours certified or some such BS, also how long before our cars black box everything and upload it at regular intervals, maybe restoring " antique " cars will have a true renaissance in the not so distant future, that and kit cars could get really big.

Here's a little 332 LS doing almost 1100 with a turbo, nice

Is there anything the LS can't do ?

Cleetus is great, I always watch his videos and he has several projects going at once, this one is going to be very cool when finished, it's going to have a 1500hp V-8 up front driving the rear wheels as usual and a jet engine in the bed both working to make a 200+ mph trap speed 1/4 mile

Crazy stuff:eek::eek:
.
and RIP Cat:( I didn't know of her and don't follow drag racing lately but tragic things seems to happen alot in lower danger practice and exhibition runs more when you least expect it.
