I often use Leonard Cohen's music to make a point, Adam. I've been a huge fan since the late 1960s. In the US crossing the border illegally is a misdemeanor, but unlike previous presidents Trump thought it would be great to separate parents from their children, sometimes deporting the parent while putting the child up for adoption. This didn't only happen with illegal immigrants. Trump doesn't want immigration at all so he had people who presented themselves at the border for being politically or otherwise threatened with death in their native countries who came here to go through the process arrested and their children taken from them. It was only the courts and to a lesser extent, public opinion that caused him to reverse himself on doing this to discourage people from coming here and asking for asylum. The amount of rhetoric from the Alt Right, the Neo Nazi skin heads has increased and they have become emboldened by Trump's own racism. He has a long history of racism from the times he was working for his father in the 1960s refusing to rent to blacks which has been well documented and he was sued in court by the Justice Dept and found to be in violation of the anti-discrimination laws. This has been a Trump virtue, to the Alt Right, for his entire adult life and though he did not start racism in this country, he is sure to blame for keeping it alive and well.
I really don't care about the fired black woman who was on his TV show and became part of his cabinet in the White House as she seems to me to be as flakey as he is and is pushing a book now that she has joined the ranks of the many people Trump has fired. She is playing the "reality" game the same way that Trump does. But, for republicans to now say it is up to them to protect Trump from prosecution by Mueller even if he conspired with Russia to affect the outcome of the 2016 election is as misguided as a party can get. If Clinton had won and it was shown that she had done what Trump has done, I would be wanting her head on a platter as much as I'm looking forward to Trump's being there. It is unconscionable that people don't care if their official is elected by illegal means, just as long as he gets elected and feel that even if it is made totally true that this happened, they still want to keep him in office. It is like there is no right or wrong, there is only win or lose. I still believe in right and wrong and I don't care if it was someone who I voted for, if they are guilty, they need to go. But, I guess now that is just me.
