Very first red laser build... IM A NOOB!

DJEEPER, i just built my first dorcy and had to use a resistor to lower the current. Stock, it outputs almost 400 ma; way too much for a gb diode (not sure what yours is rated at but probably similar). anyway wire a resistor first and then measure the current and then you can figure out how much more power you can use

Im doing Mechanical Engineering. Hopefully i will get my masters and start work with Chrysler working on Jeep Designing ;D

Im no longer using an 8x dvd burner diode.... i was using pliars to gently hold it in place while i solder the leads onto it.... then i heard a horrible crack... I cringed and looked in the hole. yup... lens is busted. After that i clamped the piss out of it and turned it into a small brass ball.

...SO....

now im looking for a 16x dvd or a diode from here. who sells the good ones that will push like 250mW?

Umm so your fit cost you a diode that could have been salvaged. I have done the same thing. so for future reference if you ever crack the diode glass again you can cut that can off the top with a dremel and as long as you don't cut too deep, will have an intact functional open can diode. I've done it with three so far.

As far as a good brand of dvd to harvest from. Pioneer errrrr.. can't recall model # gazoo will tell ya!

haha, yeah... i wanted to do a 16x anyways... just all the more reason. i just accepted that the worst had happened. I also thought it was dead before then because when i was soldering it, i didnt take heat into consideration...and it got very hot.

but yeah... looking to get a cheap DVD burner or just buy a diode from someone here...

The Pioneer 112D will net you an open can diode...these are not the easiest to harvest as they are fragile, but they are the most powerful we have found in DVD burners.

I have pushed mine as high as 500ma's with a TEC. The output was ~270mw's. I normally run it at 400ma's, and the output is ~230mw's.

Alternatively you could get in on the GB for the phasor diodes...they seem to be very close to the open cans in terms of output power.

Well I suggest you read the GB section for more information..

well, i found a killer deal on ebay for 2 16x DVD burners with stuck drawers, but they power up and the BIOS recognizes them... paid 17 bux shipped :)

Round 2!

Excellent find... :) I hope you are able to successfully harvest both of them and get the diodes to work.

47uf capacitor with 1k-ohm resistor?

47uf capacitor with 1k-ohm 0.5 watt resistor i know its the lowest level of protection, but should i add another resistor? the 0.5 watt resistors came in a package of five.

No pain no gain.. ;D

A 1K ohm resistor is way too high. Using a 2.2 ohm resistor with a pair of alkaline batteries, your current going to the diode will be appx. 160ma's.

I went to the store today and got a 2.2k ohm resistor, thanks for the advice.

But i was wondering what if i used two 1k ohm resistors would that be ok for the diode? i'm jsut trying to do something with the 1k ohm resistors.

Please take a look at my bad drawing below:-[, im not sure if the 2 resistors are connected right( one resistor behind the other.

Thank you!

before you go further note gazoo is quoting ohms, you are quoting "K"ohms
2k would be far too high......

ooops ;D im so new i didnt know, :-[ I thought the 1k ohm was the same as 1 ohm.Sorry about that.

where do people get their 2.2ohm resistors? can someone provide me with a link to a online store? radio shack didn't have any 2.2ohm resistors
