USB 532nm pen +

I was considering buying a low power diode on ebay (cheaper than a BD player) but the single AAA solution is "good enough" for me.

Really awesome find Pman! USB rechargeables make so much sense. I agree, a little LED makes a huge difference, although I like anything that lights up

I'll testify to your incredible craftsmanship. I'm lucky enough to have a small collection of your work. Really hard to explain to people that haven't seen a lot of custom builds. I have a few from different levels of builders, from very experienced to relatively new. Just the fact that you meter every single laser you own and label them says a lot.

Your discovery of the 50mw threshold for match burning is actually I feel huge. Why? Because, it really illustrates just what kind of power people are playing with here. Since lasers are so common now, I think a lot the mystery and fear is gone. A little fear can be good. It can save your eyesight.

If people understood what you've been teaching about making these inexpensive pens foucusable, they'd realize how much fun is out there to be had :)

Another great post Pman :thanks:

Thanks my friend. I just feel somewhat frustrated trying to explain to people that they really aren't "toys" and almost anyone can have a bit of fun for very little. I see people asking all the time about popping balloons and lighting matches and how the one they purchased on Ebay won't do it and suddenly their solution is to buy a 1W 445/450nm when they haven't learned to handle a more reasonable level of power first.
Personally I never want to lose the wonder of the simple and cheap. I've yet to meet someone who has seen a 532nm without me showing one. It's not like our Forum is overloaded with members. Kind of wondering when/if we will get a big inrush at some point. Every single person I've ever shown a laser thought it was very cool and are VERY grateful if I give them one AFTER going over the safety issues. I only give out a pen laser that uses regular alkalines that anyone can buy on Ebay plus they are the lowest powered ones. Just test them when they come and set the lower output ones aside.
Anyways, I'm always tinkering and trying to find ways to do stuff on the cheap so everyone can have some fun. Just spent my Christmas $ on a 1.5W 520nm and now it sits in a case with the rest of its "boring" cousins lol. Find myself changing out all the G2 with 3 elements after testing for a nicer beam. Most of the high powered beam spots are pretty ugly on a G type lens.

I would love to be your buddy and get one of these for free!!! lol, j/k. Thats pretty awesome of you and a testament to your enjoyment of this hobby. You enjoy sharing it with other people. Bravo! Great looking builds.

^^^ Send me your name and address and I'll send you something. Only have 2 of these USB units but I'm sure I can come up with one of my focus able pens with your name on it if you really would like something that very few people own.
Would be nice to give more like I used too but the $ just isn't there anymore. If you look around you may notice members with various Pman things.

You're most welcome. Lasers come and go and you never know what places are going to offer. Just never saw USB ones before.
What I actually meant to say in that last part of my main post was I went through all the rest of my 532nm pens that I hadn't made focusable yet into focusable units. Have way more pens than those that I had already done lol.

Atomic roxy I had missed your post about trying a single AAA but I'll try it.
