I've been working on what IgorT described as the ultimate/ideal sink for a while now. Its one solid piece of whatever material you want in whatever dimensions you want threaded for the AixiZ lens nuts and with a 5.6mm recess for your laser diode.  Or 9mm laser diode if you want.  No AixiZ module to cut down on heat transfer and fuss with.  Just press fit your diode, screw in your lens nut and its good to go. I'm thinking about $25 shipped on these.

Anyway, if a picture is worth a thousand words here are five thousand words.   This is just a concept sink for illustration purposes.

Re: Poll: Ultimate heatsink interest feeler

surely it won't focus if the lense is at one end, and the diode a couple of inches away from it?

I am probably wrong ,but nice idea! :)

Umm,  no it won't  - not with a standard focal length AixiZ lens anyway ;)   This is just a concept piece of kit for illustration purposes.  But the lens will screw all the way in even in this concept case.   If you have a really short fl lens like 2mm then obviously I would make the lens barrel the appropriate length or if its an AixiZ lens as is likely the case I would make it to the same inner dimensions as the AixiZ module.

It looks very nice, buy wouldn't a finned design have more surface area, thus greater heat sinking abilities?

That works for convection (air cooling), but if you're simply looking for conductive transport (e.g. you want to transfer heat from the diode to your flashlight case), you want as good of a thermal transfer as possible (e.g. one solid block).

Can you make these square or at least with a flat side too?

Looks quite useful for coupling a diode with a TEC plate and some decent thermal mass in between.

Yes, I can make them any shape and size necessary. To the post above and as already explained, if its to fit into a host then fins don't make sense. This sample sink illustrates the basic principle - I can make it to any specifications.

If you can do them square i'd be interested.. though $25 seems a bit steep for a hunk of metal...

What are you turning these out of anyways, aluminium? And in case of a flat side: how flat/even/smooth would you be able to get it?

I'd definitely be interested if you could make them to specs, with a defined size for fitting a TEC, and possibly some m3/m4 threaded holes on the bottom to aid in mechnical mounting.

$25 *shipped* as a guestimate at this point.  And keep in mind its not just a hunk of metal, it has to be precisely machined and then threaded - time consuming business.

Yes I can machine it to whatever spec you want.

Hehe.. i know it takes work to make these things, dont worry about it ;)

What are the maximum dimensions you can make?

maybe you can make a lens adjustment/holder too so that it isn't in a fixed position, but overall I like it

Well, that would be determined by the weight of shipping the thing probably but I'm thinking up to 2"x2"x3" or so.

Well, you can screw the lens nut into wherever you want but I can also install a sliding sleeve that contains the threaded section if thats what you mean?

I'm just saying that's all.. if there was a function to adjust the beam on spot no tools necessary I think it would probably top out on the aixiz modules. I think it'll be a fantastic idea and would be the better solution than to buy an aixiz module and heatsink for different hosts.

I guess I'm not too sure what you have in mind. The sink I made above is the same as the AixiZ in function, i.e. you screw the lens in and out to focus - just like the AixiZ module. That doesn' require any tools - where you thinking of additional functionality?
