Looks pretty good on the outside! The key is Driver/diode/heatsink. For red, there is not much heatsinking in this small host. I would say that a red diode from Senkat running @ 250mA's would be good...

There is actually quite plenty if you have a duty cycle![/quote]

Yes, it is a nice set up for a pocket sized little host... but what I meant was, that it is no match for the massive MXDL heatsinks that we put the open can diodes in @ 420+ mA's...

True... very true indeed...

excuse me if it has been sayed before ...
but...
could we use a Rckstr driver if we put 3 Ultra Fire 10440 3.6V instead of the regular ones.

I like this host  pretty much, the flexdrives v2 havent been shipped yet, I have some rckstr's on their ways and Aries 803T arrived.

thanks.

I have not tried the rkcstr driver yet. I know that it is a good quality driver though, and the 10440 batteries would work for that set up, unless there is a 'max voltage supply' for his drivers.

Check with rkcstr for the max voltage input. Other than that, it would only be a matter of 'fitting' the driver inside this host. The host is cheap enough... Give it a try, and please report back to let us know if there is room!

i just finished my pocket pal type host (bought it at frys) and well i couldnt wait for the heat sink to come so i made my own :)

i am never doing that again! WHAT A BIOTCH!

but it sure is a fun little host! fits great in the hand and thanks for the plastic tabs tip my battery wasnt giving it much juice! then i remembered your post

Glad I was able to help!

Yeah the plastic tabs are sometimes in the way, sometimes not.... depending on how high the positive contact is on which ever batteries you use.

I find it easier to just cut or snap the tabs off. Then you have no worries...
Jay

yeah for sure. only two of the 3 tabs were in the way on the main + one it had plenty of room.

missed this post

i am using the rckstr driver and 3 10440's and it works great still on the original charge with quite a few hours on the clock so far and still running strong.

set at 150ma

with tightly fitted washers as a heatsink.

Here's a picture of the Sku 46 heatsink...

Sku 46.jpg

The O-ring (pictured in this tutorial) is included. You would need a 1.5mm Allen wrench for the set screw.
$23 dollars plus shipping...

My two SKU.46's arrived today. In the near future, I may be buying two heatsinks off of you for them.

If anyone is interested, I plan on building a BR in one and a Red in the other.

if you are planning on a doing a high powered red i would say pick one of the bigger mxdl hosts. you get a lot more heat sinking with those and your diodes will stay coolers.

these hosts are great for blu rays though. have one thats set at 150 and another at 190ma and i havent had a problem with them heating up. (maybe a little warmth on the 190 after 5 minutes or so

Yes, I agree about the high powered open can reds....

But I think that the Sony/Senkat diode @ 250mA's to 300mA's would be a nice set up with one of these Pocket Pal builds! ;)

Im doing the same thing, I ordered to sku.46's. One for a red diode I extracted from a DVD RW myself and one for a future BR build.

I have been told a few times by various people that this isn't the best host to use for a high power red because of heat sinking but what the hey? I have never kept any of my pointers on for longer than 20 seconds anyway, I have labys for that.
