Check out the switching regulators at dimensionengineering.com. They're basically high efficiency "drop-in" replacements for the 78XX analog series.

I think my next "free time" project will be a variation of your "Ice Box" here (with a 12x diode of course)...

I have several green laser with TE cooler. They really helps a lot to pull put the heat. These lasers can work in 100% duty cycle. good work!!
 
Did you build these(w/TE coolers?) --any probs with moisture?--

also are you in the US? and are you interested in buying an Argon set-up??---hak in TX

No moisture in 5 minute run times... I believe this set up draws air through the box as well. (just a little)

So that may help with any condensation. But I have the peltier current adjusted so that it is not over cooling...
 
I just have one question, in one of the last pictures, you had a PHR-803T putting out 209mw's using 186ma's...is that safe? I heard that 100ma for a PHR was safe...but 186!!! My understanding is that that will die in...very fast...
 
i read that there was some trial and error with the voltage regs if anyones got any questions i can answer them

Yes that's true...

I had it at that current just because I didn't care if it died. I was just experimenting... (only a $10 dollar or less diode)

Now my 12X is a different story! I care if it dies! Which is why I have it set at 350mA's for longevity...

By the way, the PHR never died. I still have it. But it's not like I ran it a lot. I would say I ran it for only about 20 minutes at that currrent.

But at least two tests were 5 minute run times at that current!

Thanks for the info Jay--I think for my lasers TEC is overkill--the question about location and the argon set-up FS was meant for wee40811- he has no location in his sig.

Anyone interested in an Argon SL or TEC coolers FSorT(two that run off 5 vdc USB and one thats from a 12 vdc icechest) can PM me.---hak
 
Cooling the laser would shift it's wavelength and therefore make it dimmer. But it also allows more current to flow if you so desired. So you get higher power at shorter wavelength - is there even any increase in brightness?
 
I have not done any experimenting on brightness...

But also remember that I'm not cooling it that much with this set up. Just enough to keep it at or near the temperature it started at...
 
Yes, I built it with the idea of being able to run the diode without worrying about duty cycles.

That was the idea anyway...
 
Great project Jay!

I am thinking this can be use for a 445nm labie and push the LD hard. I am going to look into this one a little more in detail.
