DR Lava I paid,

found good priced rechargable Li-ion 18650 protected batts:

http://www.batteryjunction.com/li18322mahre.html

very good, same as the e-bay seller, only cheaper.

It doesn't have a nipple but we are only using one unit.
coupon code: cpf2006 for 5% off = $9.33 shipped for 1
Perhaps drlava could be persuaded to include a battery for an appropriate fee ;)

darn too late for coupon code... I got 2 for 20 bucks shipped.

what do you mean by no nipple? and by your post I assume that you are 100% positive that we are using one battery in these?

Re: **** True >200mW 532nm S-KY PG-200 handheld la

No nipple meaning you can't stack them if you need to without a spacer. But there is rarely a need to stack 18650s. Yes only 1 is needed. I might get the DX ones at half the price.

Fisrt post is updated with payment link and warranty info.

also, we are at 14/20 now! wow.

Re: **** True >200mW 532nm S-KY PGL-200 handheld l

OK<

On these Batteries, we got non-protected, protected, 18's, 22's, 26's. Made by Tenergy, Made by LG, Made in South Korea, Made in China.
What, what, what?

Obviously, I see it as, if you are going to spend this much for the laser, get the best money can buy to run it. I don't care what which one will save me a few bucks, I want to know which one is the BEST! (Minus the 60AH I saw for $525.00 I think it was!) So I am leaning towards the 2600's w/ PCB Protection.

But now which one??? The Tenergy, or the LG, or the Supposed Most Powerful One from South Korea? I am not fond of a China Unit?

Thoughts, Feelings, Input???

Thanks!
Joe

Lorgar: received.

A protected name-brand unit is the best. Don't trust the Ah ratings from the China ones like 'trustfire'.

Re: **** True >200mW 532nm S-KY PGL-200 handheld l

Hey DrL,
Thanks for the Fats Post.
I was looking up Batts Now.
Tenergy? How Name Brand are they? Believe I have heard of them, but?
LG, well, we all know LG.
Any other Major Players to Consider?
Thanks!
Joe

If you're really into tweaking, I think a large performance increase could be achieved by making the diode mount out of copper instead of AL, and it would even be possible to put a small constant-current TEC in there by cleaving the diode mount and inserting it before the threads.  At minimum, application of heatsink grease should give a small benefit over time.

If you're talking about running the diode along, sure, those things will let you push it a nice bit harder.

If you're thinking of upping the diode power in the greenie, I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree (something I've never done on these forums of course ;). Diodes are cheap (relatively), crystals aren't. If there's any component that can't handle the extra power, its the crystals. If these crystals could be pushed further, its pretty certain they already would be. What company, in their right mind, wouldn't afterall? (Unless you're a company like Spectra Physics who charges an arm and a leg for their DPSS and doesn't have to sweat a little underpowering for longer life) One one of these, upping the pump power would only lead to oversaturating the crystal.

As to the comments earlier, normally the temperature in these portable units is most important in its effects on the diode. Its true that the YVO4 wants to be cool, and the KTP hot for best operation, but YVO4 also only absorbs at a very narrow band of wavelengths. As temperature changes, so does the wavelength of the diode. Only ~0.3nm/Celsius IIRC, but that's a big difference when it comes to the absorption spectrum of YVO4.

I send out the Tenergy protected 2600mAh cells with the Prometheus and Oceanus units I sell. You pay a little more, but they're damn reliable batteries with an awesome >2450mAh capacity to boot.

Can't comment from much experience on the others - I just know I love those Tenergy ones.

This has always been my point when dealing with the use of LI-ion batteries for any application...mainly for safety. LG is probably the best of the ones you suggested but stay away from the chinese crap if possible. My choice for any li-ion battery would be the guy selling them here:

http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?t=170420

I personally have not dealt with him but tons of others have and have been happy. I plan to start experimenting with li-ion powered DIY lasers next year and this is where I plan to get my batteries and charger.

Yep, I was talking about trying to keep it near the 300mW peak for as long as possible, at the diode current it is already set at.

Re: **** True >200mW 532nm S-KY PGL-200 handheld l

the batts I linked from batt junction are more mah than the DX ones. they are rechargable too. I shud be gettign my batts and safety glasses by wednesday, and so Im all geared up and ready to fire this baby up when it arrives.

This is my first commercial laser (thats more than .1mw lol) I have bought, and Im excited.

Dr. lava, can you include the datasheet from the tests u do of the laser, with the laser? that way I can see exactly how much power mine is putting out. thanks.

regards,

amk
