hello forums  ;)
I decided to push a little the concept of "double laser" , in adding a green laser. I didn't have a working unit of green, so i build it with a Stenkats'Ir diode .
I had a huge amount of problem (i fried 2 Ir diode), and was obliged to fill off some of the screwing of the MXDL host .  I wanted to see if it was possible to put 3 module in one host, so it is !
The red diode is a Stenkat diode at 350 mA with a Rckstr's driver and the blue one is a phr-803T at 125 mA. Both can burn anything i want (same specification of the double laser)
The green one is an old barrel from a 50mw newish style, which i fried the diode. I added a new one with a potentiometer to know the output in order to have an output that don't surpass in intensity the red and blue one (remenber the curbe of sensibility of eye). I think there is about 280 mA with a Rckstr style driver built in the aluminium box.

So  the 3 laser need 350+125+280= 730 mA. I made little test of autonomy, with 2 CR123A at 8.31 Volt, the voltage came to 7.3 Volt after 15 minute of use; So i think i have 20 minute off full power (then the current will drop). I have cycle of On 20 sec (max) and off 10 sec, the current drawing is very high so the CR123 are a bit warm so they heat the module too.
It's a bit difficult to have beam perfectly // but with time and paper to wedge the modules, it's not a big problem.
there is a lot of filling off work, but with some machine it's feasible. But this unit need some improvement (// and output of power need to be raised) at this moment.
Here is some picture (clik on a image then move with arrow right or left):

DAAAAAANG!!! :o that is the most complicated build I have EVER seen. [smiley=beer.gif]

DUDE!

what is next? well 4 of course! lol

GREAT builds! i look forward to your new threads!

Hi mauswiesel,
what type of solder are you using?
Your solder joints seem a bit "dry". They seem to be missing flux.
Are you using rosin core solder???
Not to criticize just an observation. Cold (dry) joints have a tendancy
to be more resitive and hence will lower the power available
to the load (lasers). :)
Nice build just the same. 8-)

what i would do is take all three lasers build them separately and then tape them together.

Nice project,
Triple beams, thats neat!
I also like the open can mod on the IR diode to repair the greenie, thats a topic in itself.

We should take up a collection to get you a new soldiering iron! ;)

I cringe everytime I see that soldering iron [smiley=huh.gif] I would guess it was once a screw in tip which is now siezed in place? If so, at least clean it up with some emery and file the end at an angle ;)

That aside nice idea, especially the green fix...... I may just try to fix my dead green labby having seen that it is possible.

you need to put the laser on a motor and spin it kinda like rolling it in place.

would make a cool tunnel

Thanks guy =)
Im trying to build an other one, but  i fried 1 hour ago the diode of a Romisen 30 mw, i checked the current and lol, the driver was giving up to 800 mA?!! i won't trust this driver anymore, but i replaced the fried diode with a newer (and last) stenkat's Ir diode (needed to open the can too, not a problem with my bread-knife  ;)) and i found the max output.
Now, this greenie is at the same power that the greenie in the triple's. I can build another one, so i will destroy one of my double tomorow.

mmmmh no, im only using solder, not flux, i need some improvement in my soldering  ;D You'r right thx ! :) i will search a little about "flux" this can explain why i have always few mA which drop when my circuit is solder.
I think this building is easier with a good working greenie (but not too powerfull), i broke all my green factory but np, the intensity of green, for my eye, is equal to red, but blue is brighter. Perhaps a hard build will contain 3 potentiometer, one for each driver but very hard . :)

Those photos are really nice and sharp. Now to combine those three colors into one beam.

If you buy some Rosin Core solder the flux is in the middle of the solder its self.
The one I found on eBay #230287890659 is .020" in diameter. Perfect for small
tight work like you do. There is enough solder on that roll to make hundreds of
builds like yours.
If that is too expensive I found eBay #310059098695 which is the Flux only in
paste form.
Either way, the flux will allow your solder to flow like water and not like toothpaste.
It will also make your solder joints shinny :)

get some 62/36/2% tin/lead/silver solder!

its very good for surface joints and will usually have flux in it.

but still even flux in the solder is not enough you need to flue the joints so the heat flows to the metals and makes a strong joint.

you also just need a new soldering iron you need a clean tip and it should be cleaned before every joint.

the quick clean process is just putting some solder on it and then wiping it on your sponge to get it nice and clean again.

also you know the smoke that comes off the solder when your soldering? that is the flux burning. solder alone will not smoke.

so most likely you are already using some sort of flux based solder but as said above thats not enough.

:)

when i buy a new soldering iron next week i'll gladly send you mine if you just pay for shipping

Thanks laserguy, i will try this, i just buy one  :)

Omg i got a bad day.I worked all last night and this day on my second triple. I replaced my fried diode with a Stenkat's one, (my last) and i build my mod taking picture. It was almost finish, (99.99999999%), i was putting some black feld on it, and the pump diode suddenly died ! there was no mistake, the diode could'nt handle this current, i was at 320 mA, im so scared/bored/fucked/  :-[  :'(  . I dunno if there is some menber who are using this diode. Can they hold more than 300 mA (i saw the >400 mA of Mike's)
"shit happens" as you said :/
i will buy some more to stenkat to continue this mod. It has a newer design, i would know if it was possible to fit 3 module with no filling. You can but you must fill off the screwing of the Mxdl, better solution in my opinion. Here is some photo, it was full working untill i put my black feld. Im so... weird ! but maybe i must use full working unit of green instead of making my own, it's more interesting but harder. I bought 3 5mw from Susie, i will try to build another one in few month (now i have to go at university  :-/ end of hollyday  :'()

edit :
oh thanks sk8nmidget you'r nice =))) i will try the one of ebay auction, thanks for the tip also ! :) :)

i need more visible beam ;)
I have an idea about an open can at 460 mA and a 803T at 170 ma. A 30 mw greenie will be fine too. I probably will need a bigger host
