I would say it's better to be alarmist in this kind of situation then think that nothing will happen just to find out they end up banning lasers. Better to be cautious and teach newbies to be cautious.
It's already happening. Handheld lasers over 5mw are being seized by custom left and right even if they have all the required safety features and accession number as required by the FDA. This started last summer. Go back and read Event_Horizon's post about how LG's handhelds were being seized and sent back to them.
Sadly it won't matter. The safety of airline pilots and passengers will always trump the laser hobbyist. Makes me glad I bit the bullet and ordered a 473 and 589 handheld right before the crackdown started.
