When it is easier to get a gun than a high powered laser pointer you know that something is seriously wrong with the laws in your country.

No matter how good your gun is, there's not a chance in hell it's posing a viable threat to a plane. A 1W focused greeny on the other hand - that can cause major damage.

uhh, if a plane is coming in to land, and you shoot a 50 caliber bullet into the plane, it probably wouldn't be good

So you are saying that a good 50 cal rifle with a scope and silencer poses no threat to a landing plane?

That's a fairly different scenario. A landing plane is vulnerable to a lot more than just lasers and bullets. On the subject of airborne planes, I don't think anything ballistic is really going to work. Except for those insane rail guns they're developing at the US Navy.

The whole problem IS landing planes being harassed with lasers. The problem isn't planes miles up in the sky being attacked with lasers.

No but you can rob a store, you can rob someone on the street, you can shoot someone that you don't like in the head. :p There are a lot more gun related injuries and deaths than laser related even if you only consider the last 2 years ::) These attacks on planes are just incidents for now.I mean comme on...A gun IS a weapon, the only purpose being to accelarate a small piece of metal enough to fataly injure someone, and it's more dangerous than a laser. ::)

Man that Barrett .50 82A1 rifle you guys have over there armed with armor piercing or incendiary rounds (which are illegal but that's never stopped anyone) + shoot at turbines or cockpit when the planes are flying low either after take-off or landing (semiautomatic so you can pop off a lot of rounds in a small amount of time) = oh shi...

The media are total experts on lasers. Don't even question their ultimate authority.

Yes, and they're being harrassed with lasers. NOT with .50 BMGs. The governments are responding to that, in their typical bumbling way - either by banning it outright or charging "fines" (read: laser tax) on import.

Anyway, since Australia is the point of focus here and guns are banned outright there, this argument is null. Now if lasers were banned in the USA, that would be a different story. Maybe you could lobby to have them reclassified as "arms" ;)

Guns are banned in AU? Ok nvm my previous statement then. Still banning lasers will do absolutely nothing if they still can't catch the guys doing this.

They couldn't really ban them in the usa because all you would have to do is say that you carry them around for non lethal self defense.

a one watt greenie wont do any damage at all to a plane
it may blind the pilot for a second or so but at those altitudes the laser would look like a big green flashlight

Just to clear things up,
guns aren't banned here in Australia (I have two rifles, a .308 and a .243),
only certain types.

You may only buy a rifle that is bolt-action,
semi-automatics are banned but can be exempt with proper reason (farmer),
fully automatics are banned outright and are only used by law enforcement or the military.

In Handguns only fully automatics banned.

Also you must complete a firearms safety course and examination before you may apply,
at which point a background check will be done by the police.

After about 6 months of bureaucratic BS you get your license.

If any aussies here want to know more you can read everything here:
