The solution to all of your IR worries

Ok, I took some measurements, the IR from the unfiltered Newwish pen laser I have does NOT spread out like a flashlight, it stays in a fairly tight beam. Divergence of the beam is 2.4mRad, this is a good thing.

Should I make a topic to show my findings/pictures or should I just post them here?

How can I not look down? Do you mean bend over and look directly down?

Does this leak IR? http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11315
Basically don't put the laser on a table and walk across the room and then look at the beam with the laser pointer in your general direction. The red laser won't leak IR but you can't see the beam and red lasers are generally boring.

Btw wind does NOT affect IR. Ir is nothing but ordinary light that your eyes can't see.

I thought the beam is visible. On the sight it even says visible during daytime, just not as bright as some Greenes

This is to prove to everybody that not all unfiltered laser's IR output comes out like a flashlight.

For this test I used a NewWish pointer, it looks like this:

I folded over some film negative and I got out my IR camera to take some pictures of the dot. Here is a picture of the dot from up close:

As you can see the dot is about 5mm.

Here is the dot from 30 feet

It is about an inch wide, that makes the divergence around 2.4mRad. This is nothing like a flashlight like everybody thinks. Now this could be different for some lasers, but this proves that some have a well collimated IR dot. This is a good thing that the IR stays with the green because you will only get exposed to real IR if you shine the green laser in your eye, which shouldn't happen.

Dx is known to heavy overrate their products. That red laser will be less visible than a 5mw green.

Btw, I think most of the "True" lasers have filters. The vids im watching on the sites have people very close to the laser, and also, people are walking right by them.

A lot of the people are idiots and you shouldn't always base your opinion on youtube vids. The problem with the true lasers is that only some of them have filters and they can lure you into a false sense of security if you get one without an IR filter.

I still dont see how IR can get to you, unless you leave a laser on a table and walk right next to the beam..

I can only see how IR can harm other people (ex: someone standing right in front of you to the right of the beam when firing at like 5 ft away...)

Exactly. Ir isn't that bad. Buy the laser and have some fun. Just remember to use common sense and you should be fine.

YAAYY. I think this IR discussion is over now, lol.

Edit: I got 1 last question. If I am pointing at a building, like say, 20ft away, and I see someone walking down the street (to the right of the beam), they are fine right? Because the laser is shooting 20ft away, and they are standing like 20ft away from the beam.

If they are 20 feet away from the beam they will be fine.
