The First Laser

space20991.jpg
Hopefully this will happen :)
**********

I can't wait for this new version of 'Space 1999'. Been waiting patiently now for about a year.

I want to build a stun gun (see my avatar) using the new 5watt diodes and am waiting for the drivers to be developed. Then I'll probably build one of the new series stun guns too.

(I like laser guns) :D

Wow! That will be coooool. I like those new diodes too. I saw a working Space 1999 laser gun on ebay a while back and I thought it was you, but they were in an Eastern Bloc country. 1W blue diode.

I hope they get it done soon, I've been waiting too :)

I dig the 6k W laser, but you can tell Mrs. Maiman either wasn't very well prepared to talk about her husbands Laser, or super comfortable and extensively knowledgeable about what she was trying to present. She was going back and forth stumbling through the presentation, but definitely a nice way to try and honor her husband and the awesome field of lasers.
WTG ~LB, nice find, +1

Thanks mdubbicus! Yeah, I don't think she was the scientist of the family  Neat to see though.

6Kw has been surpassed in CO2 by Rofins at 8Kw and Cross flow Mitsubishis to order at up to 12Kw.

Higher power levels are just round the corner for industrials based on older military technology...it's sure a great time to be involved with lasers.

cheers

Thanks for the info! Really amazing  12Kw older mil tech Lol. Just imagine what's outside of the public domain

The number that was often bounced around in the Physics world was we know about roughly the stuff that is 25 years behind current.
So 2020 technology would actually be what *they* had in 1995, allowing for Moores law (technology doubles every 18 months) I hate to think what is really available :)

The joking comment about 6Kw pointers may not actually be that much of a joke ;)

best wishes

Dave

Sorry for dropping in here kinda late. I've been away for awhile...other stuff, you know.

Thanks for the link! Personally I think she seemed a bit nervous, and that's why it came out awkward. I noticed on the close up that her hands seemed to be shaking a little. She might not be used to being in front of a camera and that affected her ability to be clear. It doesn't mean she didn't know what she was talking about. (Hey, cut me some slack. As another female, I feel the need to defend her, LOL!)

I don't know if this has already been posted somewhere, but I just recently ran across this video that shows Ted Maiman himself speaking about that first laser:

Thanks for sharing the Awesome!

Really cool to hear about the initial competition and race to develop the first working laser and well as Ted Maiman's resolve to go against his company and the opinion of respected scientists of his time to make it work. :)

Have you seen the "2mega watt" pulse gun some guy on YouTube made? It punches through metal :O it's also ir.

I think you may be referring to LPF member AnselmoFanZero. He's very talented I don't believe it's 2 MW though, maybe 2000 mW?

Do you have a link? He makes coil and gauss guns though that may be in those voltage ranges.
