The " Cyan Cannon " build starts

Darn...it seems like with modern costing technologies, someone would have found a way to do that with prisms (remember im not talking about dichros).
 





A little update...have selected a 16mm " Angel Eye " latching switch.

Had to move the LD mount block about 5mm forward...and I will need a 4mm spacer between the underside of the top crown and the Acrylic OD to raise the switch up as to provide enough vertical clearance...but I am thinking a nice I/O is a good thing to make room for !!!

CAD is great....just keep " moving the parts around " until you have no interference issue's !!! See switch and V14 drawing.:evil:

Lookin good :cool: how well do these "hosts" (they seem more like a handheld-labby hybrid) stay upright on their own? It sure seems like they would just roll around as they please :p

Well...the DH stands on it's end/upright just fine...as you would expect. Yes. it will roll....but the switch echelon will prevent roll past 360.

I have thought of a 1/4 20 threaded mount hole placed on the CG/midpoint....but then....because the Lipo cell compartment is centered....there is only 1.97mm thickness between the OD bottom and the inside Lipo under chamber....Not really enough for a solid connection socket !!

The challenge is fitting all the necessary parts into the most compact geometry. IMNSHO....a smaller diameter would be very much ergonomically
desireable.....but it's not gonna happen....not using the 18650 LiPo cell 4 power...

I have considered other LiPo configuration's.....but prefer the 18650. Anybody have any other ideas ???:tinfoil::tinfoil::tinfoil::na:

If it was up to me I'd go for a box host (perhaps with slightly round edges). That way you could trim a few mm on the sides and on the top. And it won't roll ;)

But I know I'm part of a minority that enjoys box hosts.

Yea !!! I have had those thought....thinking " Outside the Cylinder " haha
But....while a box configuration would be a perfect platform on which to place optics voodoo....and would be very efficient for using all interior space...the ergonomic factor again comes into play...it is just somewhat cumbersome to hold on to !!! And the final consideration is that the " extra " metal does serve as a extended heatsink...which is a good thing...will think on this ! :undecided:

This may be an ignorant question, but what prevents prisms from being used like this? Excuse the wonderfully awful MS Paint drawing:

Where, similar to a PBS, one beam passes through and the other is reflected.

The green beam goes wrong way in the picture. It will exit and will go at different angle than red one. (That's why we have prism spectrometers). You probably could match those beam choosing different incident angles of both beams, but that's a complicated mechanical design. :thinking:

To compensate the mismatch the second prism is added.

Will you have potentiometers to adjust lasers' power and change "color"?
 
You could add through holes parallel to the batteries' hole to reduce weight, increase surface area, and possible channels for water cooling :crackup:

:thinking::thinking::thinking: ????? Water cooling ??? Variable current control for selectable Blue/Green mixing ??? I suppose...sky's the limit !!! But... for me.....I just want a whole lotta Coherent Cyan Beamage !!! That is complicated enough !!:san::san::san:

Any update on this? The form factor combined with this diode combination got me really excited initially.

Any progress since then? I'm really looking forward to seeing this finished!

This got pushed back......next in line though !!!

Working on finishing up the "Purple pHaze" project.....see the write up in the Experimental area.

It will happen !!!!!!! For sure !!!!!

Question. Won't both of the diodes need their own set of corrective optics? If it were two blue diodes I can see them sharing the same pair at the same distance but for the very reason why a prism causes light to separate. Diffraction is it?

VG....HHHHmmmmmmm.....you have a very good point. The dual colors might very well need different separation distances between the Cylindrical Lens sets !!! On the " Purple pHaze "....this is the case !!!

If this is correct...and two (2) sets of Cylindrical lenses are needed...I am almost certain....all these optics will not fit under the Acrylic canopy of the proposed Cyan Cannon build !!

Well....the development path now is to obtain the LD's ( Green and Blue)...and experiment before any work on the host should proceede !!! Good catch ! Thanx !

You know you could just set the diodes next to each other with their own set of corrective optics and then use a right angle mirror to reflect one of the beams into a pbs cube. Wouldn't take up more space than that's already there.

VG...see the attached pic V17. The problem is that the curvature of the Acrylic canopy reduces available width as the components mounted on the optical platform go vertically upward.

The space available at the level of the optical platform will likely fit two (2) sets of Cylindrical optics....but...as you go upward, one just runs outta room !!
Possible solutions;

1) Use very, very small Cylindrical lens sets....as was done on "Dragon's Head" build...so all components " Fit under the hood".

2) Increase the overall OD of the build to yield more room for the standard optics....which will also possible allow all components to " Fit under a bigger hood".

Working with smaller optics demands more fine placement of the beams onto the cylindrical lenses = PITA.

Going to a larger OD form factor means the unit is more bulky = will work, but might look less attractive.

No easy solution here !! :eg::eg::eg: Time will tell !!
