Thank You President Trump

What does your President say?

In a television interview with NBC, Donald Trump says he doesn't know whether he has to respect the Constitution of the United States. To another question he responds that he cannot judge whether American citizens, like non-citizens, deserve due process, according to what the supreme law of the United States says, and comments: "I'm not a lawyer." He also states that he is not seeking "a third term" and says that he intends to extend the deadline for TikTok if there is still no agreement. Then, on Truth, he announces the reopening of Alcatraz prison and tariffs on foreign films. What does your President say?

Cardinal Dolan: «Trump's post dressed as Pope, a bad figure»

The cardinal of New York comments on the photo of the US president dressed as a pontiff: «It's not a good thing»

Timothy Dolan, cardinal of New York, in Rome for the Conclave, at Monte Mario to celebrate mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe, the church of which he is titular. The mass is over and on the churchyard he smiles with the children, jokes with a woman: «What are we eating for lunch?». During the service, at the time of the offerings of the faithful, he had also joked from the pulpit: «Let's hope that the Americans give something too».

In front of the journalists' questions, Cardinal Dolan remained serious, before entering the church. «What do you think of the image of Trump dressed as Pope?». The first answer is not accidental: «It wasn't good». An answer opposite to the one the President of the United States had given a few hours earlier when he was asked what he thought of Dolan: «He is very good». Words intended as support for the cardinal in his election to the papal throne.

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is located in the upper part of the Monte Mario neighborhood, where not many Americans live, but quite a few arrived for Cardinal Dolan's mass. However, he decides to respond in Italian when, after the mass, the journalists' questions about Trump's post in a cassock continue to be insistent: «Did you feel offended, Cardinal?». He cuts it short: «You made a bad impression». And this is his last rebuke. The cardinal of New York dodges the other questions, annoyed at this point: «Should the post be removed? Should Trump apologize?». The faithful surrounding him help him move away: «Who knows?». A crowd awaits him.

Celebrating mass a few days before the Conclave is a consolidated tradition. Each cardinal celebrates it in the Roman church to which he belongs. Timothy Dolan would have liked to enjoy only the smiles of those faithful of his so far away, in space and time, the last time he celebrated mass was in 2013, the year of Benedict XVI's abandonment. The year of Francis's arrival.

But that post generated by artificial intelligence, of Trump dressed as the Pope, is impossible to ignore. It was posted on the social Truth, first, but then also on the "profiles" of the White House. It outraged the Catholic world, the bishops of New York in the front line: all together they distanced themselves with much criticism.

For Timothy Dolan, however, it is not easy to directly attack the president who supports him and whom he supports. "I have no preferences in the election of the Pope", Trump had said referring to ten American cardinals. But then it was only about him that he had said: "He is very good".

At Monte Mario, the crowd helps him. Dolan can also talk about other things: "The week that is starting is very important. I asked for prayers in the homily because we really need them. You can hear the prayers of people in the world and yesterday, before we left, the cardinal dean, Cardinal Re, told us: make sure people pray for us".

He can also talk about what is closest to his heart: what will the new Pope be like? Will he be another Francis? Diplomatic answer: "Let's hope he has his smile and then his humility, his simplicity. Then if we are lucky we could even have a mix of the last three Popes: the qualities of Francis, but I also think of the intellectual intensity of Benedict XVI and John Paul II with his courage and his call to follow Jesus. It would be a blessing if we could combine these great characteristics of theirs".
