Hey everyone. We all love lasers here, we all know that. But how many of us get to work in a state-of-the-art laser research lab?! I do!

A few days ago, I received an email from the physics adviser at my school (I'm a physics/math major) informing me (and other physics majors) of a new upper division breadth course for physics electives. The class? Laser optics!

It's a lab course, so we'll have some great hands-on things to work with. I sent an email to the professor and he seems really excited that I'll be in the class (I let him know that I have experience with high-powered lasers and that it's a hobby of mine).

Hopefully, we'll become good buddies :D Hah. Also, I may even be able to finagle a few old lasers outta him!

Unfortunately, they only have two lasers at the lab (available to the students, anyway).

Can't wait to meet him. I'm sure it'll be a fascinating class. There'll be a power meter there I am sure I can use for calibration and I bet I could even get my monochromator calibrated too ^_^
 





LUCKY you! That would be really amazing for somebody with a laser hobby! Will you be able to get some pics etc of what you will be doing?

Its going to be a very math intensive semester for sure.

I hope you get the hands - on side of things like I have so far. I've been there for 1 year now, and I plan on staying around for awhile longer. Its all about the people you know! :shhh:
 
I think I may be doing a prereq for your class next semester too. Classical 2, particles, fields, and matter. It's basically the first rigorous course describing E&M.
 
Congrats dude you are going to have a lot of fun! I just got into a laser research lab also and I'm really excited for next semester as well. :D

Classes tend to be math "intensive".

Rigor almost implies no one wants to do it.

:p

Lab work tends to be fiddling with software until you think it works again, and then having to adjust hardware likewise, only to find that your software screwed things up again. Always a battle.
