Hey Everyone!

Okay, to start off with:

I live in a small town >100k people, and there is NOWHERE within 100 miles that you can get "laser stuff".

I've also noticed a not-insignificant demand among the local community for a local "laser shop" if you will.

If I sell, everything will be made-to-order (so, no risk for me :D ) and I won't sell to kids looking for a machismo complex or to bumbling fools who have no idea what's going on.

Also, I'll be limiting the output of lasers I sell to >300mW.
And, none of the lasers will be pre-built. Everything will require *some* soldering (at least soldering the lead wires to the battery housing).

My question is: Is this legal, and if so, do I need any special permits or licences to operate the business (out of my own house).

Thanks

Sporelord,

You failed to tell us what country or state you live in so we can point you in the right direction to find the information* you seek.

*You do know it is ridiculous to seek legal advice on an interweb forum, right?

Firstly,

My forum name comes from a PC game I enjoy (Spore, EA, 2006)
I've used this name in a bunch of different places, and you're the first one to find something strange about it. And I have no idea what that picture is supposed to be....

Secondly, I live in Texas.

Laser pointers over 5mW are illegal in the US, so no, don't bother trying to deal locally unless you're dealing in cat toys.

Au contraire.

FINISHED lasers over 5mW are banned from SALE. My the lasers I'm planning on selling are not finished. They still require some assembly.

Okay

You clearly have a problem with me.
I don't get what it is...
But..
In the most eloquent terms I can muster...
I don't give a **** what you think.

I am going to do something worthwhile. More worthwhile than e-stalking people on a laser forum. (kinda sad, if you think about it)

I'll get back to you.

EDIT------

THINKING of starting a laser business
in order to help out others in my community
so that they don't have to spend COUNTLESS HOURS like I did
trawling the internet for advice on how to do what should be a SIMPLE project.

If only lasers WEREN'T a simple project, maybe there wouldn't be as many dickheads shining them at planes if it still required 1/2 a brain cell to make/obtain one.

No one has anything against you, they are telling you it's a bad idea to start a local laser business. Even laser modules have some regulation in the US I believe, so you could still get in a heap of trouble if authorities find out, and shell out mega money in court to defend yourself.

If I recall correctly, Mohrenberg had trouble with the FDA over this technicality. Besides, if you already (think you) know the answer, why are you asking?

"I know the speed limit is 45MPH officer, but speed is relative, and I was only going 35 in relation to your car, not the 80 your radar gun spat out."

I don't think a Build-A-Laser shop for a town of 100,000 people would work out like a Build-A -Bear shop would.

Even if you had the training, knowledge and experience necessary for the Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation of some potential product or products, is an idea of dubious legality, big investment in time and money, expensive business liability insurance, if you could get it at all, to protect you from suits by anyone who gets harmed, whay about warranty/guarantee so on and so on. What about build training/instruction? What about finished product handling and safety training for anyone who buys a "kit" including solder and a soldering iron? Is an idea that for many reasons is not a good idea not the least of which would be legal problems local, State, and Federal associated with same.

Hey Sporelord!

Nice what you are offering!

I want to order a 589nm laser from you. How long do you think you need to assemble this one? 20mW would be enough.

Thanks for your answer!

I too would love to purchase a 589nm from you... I only have 30.00... scratch that damn kid needs damn diapers again :)

For some reason reading this thread made me think of this...

No hint which moon they´re refering to.

Astronomers found quite a few veryvery small moons around Jupiter and Saturn which don´t even have a name yet.

Back to the topic, please contact me about the 589nm built!

True, but even those are quite a bit larger then an elephant.

On the subject of 589's... I'll take two, I'm thinking $50 each? Also do you do 593nm? What about 510nm, 556nm?
