Hello everybody..

I recently picked up a used 1.4w 445nm here on LPF. The laser seems to operate just fine. The problem I am having is when I take the lens out and shine the light from just the diode on the wall it has a huge black spot in it! I have tried to clean the window with alcohol but I can still see the spot on the window. The size of the black spot is almost a third the size of the spot projected. I have done several searches and seen people decanning the diode. I have also seen people say they just break the glass in the window? I am wondering which way works the easiest/best?

I appreciate the help

Before you do anything drastic take a picture of the raw output of the diode with no lens in and post it so we can give better advice.

Don't do anything. Post the raw output so someone can analyze.

However, I found decanning easier.

Definitely something on the window. Could even be on the inside of the window. I f it were me I would just leave it alone. Depending on your skill level and tools available you could either decan it or poke out the window. I believe most people use a dremel to decan them unless you have the tool to do it.

I don't really recommend a dremel. For the unskilled user, it may spread dust inside the diode, that may hit the die or output facet.

Two pliers for decanning SLOWLY (I said, very, very slowly) should work fine. Well, it did for the unskilled user (me). You can always get some very low power diodes (working) and practice on them.

The results of my decanning can be seem in my chromed SH-032 build...

So... I see its a mixed basket of suggestions. I wonder if it would just be better to swap the diode for a new one?

You can send to some member decan it for you.
If shipping here wouldn't be so expensive... I'd do it :(

ok i have a related issue a while ago i bought a lazerer 500mw blue cyber laser from lazerer and now it has the normal laser dot but also has a blue haze around the dot, and that was not there originally, it showed up later, i cant take accurate pictures as it just shows up as a bright blue blob on my iphone but i would describe it as perhaps a galaxy effect around the dot.

thoughts ?
